Airport admits 'strip search' body scanners WILL show people naked
New 'strip search' full body scanners being trialled in Australia will show people's private parts, officials have admitted.
But to spare their blushes, the faces of passengers will be blurred.
Domestic travellers leaving Melbourne airport over the next six weeks will be asked to test the new security scanners that can see through clothing.
The X-ray backscatter body scanner has been described by critics as a "virtual strip search."
The scanner is similar to one that was trialled at Paddington station in London in 2006 in direct response to the tube bombings in July 2005.
Similar systems have also been tested at Gatwick airport.
The new scanner is designed to show people concealing weapons - but it will show a lot more than that, airport chiefs have admitted
Cheryl Johnson, general manager of the Office of Transport Security, said:' It will show the private parts of people, but what we've decided is that we're not going to blur those out, because it severely limits the detection capabilities. '
'It is possible to see genitals and breasts while they're going through the machine, though,' she admitted
However, Ms Johnson said there were a number of measures in place to tackle concerns about privacy.
"The faces are automatically blurred and ... it's only a chalk-style outline, it's not as invasive as some of the other equipment that we've got," she said.
The scanner uses a low energy X-ray to reveal any objects, metal or otherwise, under a person's clothing, including body features.
The testing will be entirely voluntary during the trial, which is being undertaken to test how the new scanners would affect the flow of passengers through the security point.
"It does see through clothing, but it's not a photographic image, it's a low-energy X-ray that reflects off the skin," added Ms Johnson.
"The security officer that's looking at it is located away from the screening lane, so there's no comparison of the person walking through and the image.
'The images are not saved, you literally walk through, the screener hits a button to say clear and the image goes."
The new scanners will be tested at Melbourne Airport alongside 'next generation' baggage X-ray machines that can detect explosives in luggage.
Hand-held scanners that can detect explosives in liquids are also being tested.
Ms Johnson said these were a direct response to an alleged terrorist plot in 2006 to detonate liquid explosives on-board airliners.
She added all the scanners had tested well in laboratory conditions, but information was needed on how they would impact on passenger amenity.
The trial runs until the end of the November, and the results will be analysed before the technology is rolled out for real, possibly at domestic and international terminals.

Here's a comment i read on the website by someone who actually had to walk through one of these airport scanners:
I was pulled to one side at Heathrow several years ago to go through one of these scanners that they were trialing. At the time it was new and I wasn't told how invasive it was until after the check, when the Operator offered to let me see the image.
It was only my rear view that he offered me to see but I can confirm that it does show everything! He explained that it distorted the body somewhat but to be honest I was shocked and vowed to refuse this type of scan any time in the future.

This isn't exactly a new concept, but i'm seeing on news stations that US airports may look to this as an answer for chemicals and other hazardous materials hidden on one's person. I'm somewhat torn...if it stops one attempt at killing 100+ people then it's hard to say it's not worth it. But you still have to take into consideration that kids will be walking through this thing. And also, how far is too far?
Here's an image (though you can tell it's been slightly blurred):

Some more bull .
yeah, no.
no.
that's way too personal, no.
For the record I couldn't care any less about walking through one of these scanners. I'm 23...i could give a if someone sees me naked. But i could imagine having a wife and children, and I can see how it might be difficult to push them through this thing to have them exposed to whomever.
Over half of posters on ST just hit up Google for a job application.
TSA employee of the future.......

That is SUPER intrusive...but if it saves my life one day...it's hard to imagine not walking through one.
Too bad it won't.
"if it saves my life one day"
but no one is concerned about 90K USAers killed, every year, by AVOIDABLE medical errors, are they?
Teabaggers only teabag against what the corps pay them to teabag against.
Or about 10s of 1000s of BigPharma customers killed or maimed by (FDA-approved, then recalled) drugs.
300 travellers killed in one bombed plane? This means war!
90000/300 = 300x as many AMericans killed by medical errors? yawn.
Beat me to it!
Exactly.
Australians don't seem to care much for their own liberty.

"No one is concerned"?
Excuse me, but could you please point out in this thread where ANYBODY said that they were not concerned about preventable medical errors.
I'll wait.

didn't think so.
Nice attempt at a hijacking, though.
So they don't appear pornographic.
Anyone think of a fat person as pornographic?
I was reading more about this
and they said the blurring effects could be removed by the operator, and they could choose to see you fully naked whenever they wanted.
this is garbage. i don't care about myself really, but i don't want my family going through those things.
lol, cause more than half this country is full of fat lazy people.
what's the point if not all airports can get it?
Standardizing is probably more cost effective and will probably work better than pouring money into a new tech.
Um, what?
A rather large inconvenience and intrusion but if it prevents disaster, I'm in.
Ann Coulter went on a tirade against these full-body scanners at airports. I think she just doesn't want anyone to see her penis. --Craig Ferguson
Its ridiculous, but in europe they want to implement these scanners also. Holland as already done so, by being the biggest buttlicking of the USA. There was alot of discussions going on and many also in the parliament did not want to implement these scanners, but hey if USA says you need to do it, they'll do it.
Now Spain wants to sit around the table with other european countries to discuss this and prevent individual countries like holland, already implementing this rule.
I think its ridiculous. Its way too private, this is a huge violation of a person's privacy and is in violation with some treaties and basic rights we people have. And yeah, you can implement this by so called 'war against terror' but that doesnt help .
You cant just do anything under the name of 'war against terror'. Besides, it wont stop terrorists or wannabe terrorists from carrying bombs and wanting to blow up planes and attack. Its impossible to seal everything waterproof. If a terrorist wants to do something, he'll find a way, if there are body scanners or no bodyscanners, he will still find a way.
So please let them not be stupid by introducing such BS measures, they should rather strengthen their own ing intelligence agencies. I mean, the Nigerian guy, even his father came two months before it happened to warn the USA about his son. If their intelligence and their administration was strengthened and proper it would not have happened at all. But if these scanners were placed two months ago, it still would have happened.
But isnt this probably more about interest some people and key figures have by implementing such rules? I bet alot of people and contractors make big in money out of these scanners, and with scaring the people, they almost force them to get these scanners under the name of 'war against terror'.
Its just insane, unbelievable...But hey, who cares? they are going to do it anyway, nobody will stop them because in the name of 'war against terror' they can do everything they want, and still get away with it. Something we've seen alot since 9/11.
They will probably wear the squelch button out...ugly *blur* ugly *blur* semi-hot *sharp contrast" fat ugly *blur* ugly *blur* really hot *sharp contrast* uhhhh can you back up and do that again? now turn around...bend over...arms above your head...
what?? what is the big deal? a featureless outline of a human body!! oh no...i might get pregnant!
seriously, wtf...
Maybe they should just do away with all of this damn security at airports...
New rule should be, come strapped to the teeth with grenades and guns, and be prepared to fight for your seat. Could just have planes show up at a certain time and "best man wins" for the seat.
All of this security is offending me...enough already!
