I point more to their complete lack of a power forward as a bigger weakness. I can only conclude that management wanted to experiment with all-small-ball-all-the-time. They wouldn't be the first team to do that but perhaps the first team to purposely seek out such a lineup. Maybe the plan was to run Hairston in the Finley/Jefferson small ball role all season. I can't imagine how badly the team would be doing without the last minute addition of Jones.
As for the players mentioned, Jerrells point guard play has impressed me -- he seems to be farther along in his development that I figured he would be -- but he gets lit up far too often by his man, which is something I didn't expect. I think there are several guards ahead of him on the potential call-up list, so I expect him to continue developing in Austin the rest of the season. Maybe the Spurs can get him into summer league for further evaluation, as he could be a future third stringer.
Gee is a pretty frustrating player. He has all the tools to be an NBA player, but almost none of the characteristics that would make him a good role player for the Spurs. He is a black hole on offense, which isn't necessarily a bad thing for the Toros as his scoring and FG% attest, but his touches would necessarily drop dramatically on the Spurs so he would need to do other things on the floor. These things, like passing, outside shooting and defense, are almost totally missing from his game. Gee is a call-up candidate for a team looking for someone who can score and get to the line, but he has a long way to go before he could be considered a complete player, even in the D-League.
Jones pretty much is what he is at this point, which is a slow, undersized NBA center. That's great for the D-League though, as his numbers show. I have noticed his interior passing is above average, and the timing of his blocks has actually improved this season. I'm really glad he is on the team, but I do see his potentially getting called up for a team looking for a big body to fill a roster if nothing else. Jones is really too good for the D-League but not good enough to be a rotation player in the NBA.
The rest of the team? Journeymen and chuckers for the most part. I'm really surprised there hasn't been more roster turnover because many of the players just don't seem to fit the Toros' mold of the past two seasons. I guess I was just spoiled by them. This team can and has reached that level of performance, but not enough to match the success. Certainly getting Malik back for an extended period could help that.
