So the last 3 nights as I've been playing mw2, I've been intermittently lagging. However my ping is good. It's not a constant thing. It's like every 30-60 seconds or so, my modem loses connectivity for just a fraction of a second and then it's 100% fine until it happens again 30 seconds later. The modem doesn't crash, it just completely drops the internet for a split second.

Even when I'm not playing or when the modem isn't in use (either by ethernet or wireless), I can see the internet light flicker on and off, really quick, every minute or so. My speeds are great otherwise. Anybody got any ideas about what's causing this or how to fix it besides buying a new modem?

Talked the local DSL people and everything is good from their end. So I'm pretty sure it isn't just a ty phone line.

DSL is not the best for gaming because there is quite often intermittent signal failure, particularly in urban areas. It is fine for surfing, if you can handle the occasional 'connection failure' error. But sustained data transfer just isn't likely.

^ Ideally cable would be better, I know, but I'm lazy and my DSL's worked fine for some time. My ping is good enough and it's always been stable. I'm not going to host 20 people in a private game, but it works fine for my 360.

After poking around, I found out the problem (I think) is 'near end' crc errors, which yeah, would imply there's a problem with my phone line or modem, hopefully the later. Still, a relatively new development.

    Anyways, thanks for the consideration.

It is a bit of a myth that ping is the be all and end all... When I play P2P games like WarRock my ping is often good, when I get a ping at all...

Different phone jack might work. You might be able to rewire your lines a bit to make a more solid connection.

    Best of luck!

Yeah, sounds like static on the line or something similar. Cable would be better.

Welp, yeah, unless I figure out if it's a phone filter or jack or something, looks like I'll be taking the plunge and calling Comcast. Might as well make it now.

    Appreciate the replies.
