Sounds to me like Karl is giving himself credit. It would be different if Pop said, "You know, I thought back on that conversation I had with George and realized that he was right."
Better off bench?
The Spurs got a spark in Game 2 when Barry replaced Ginobili in the starting lineup. The Nuggets found out about it an hour before the game, when the Spurs' lineup was posted. Karl believes he might have had something to do with San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich making the change.
"I laughed about it because I sat with Pop last year when I was on ESPN and he was starting Ginobili," Karl said. "I said, 'Pop, you don't have the spirit off the bench that you had (during the 2002-03 season).' I know Ginobili's different as your starter. He had (Hedo) Turkoglu coming off the bench, and he was lost and confused and frustrated. I remember having that conversation and then three weeks later he started Turkoglu and Ginobili went to the bench."
Karl hinted Popovich might have another reason to bring his all-star guard off the bench.
"I don't know that Ginobili's healthy enough to play 35 minutes, and maybe that's why (Popovich's) doing it," Karl said. "But I know the spirit of Ginobili off the bench is pretty dangerous because he just seems to bring a juice and a life to his team that as a starter he hasn't done consistently."
When Ginobili doesn't start, it alters the Nuggets' strategy somewhat.
"It just kind of sets your rotation differently," Karl said. "I'm going to try to coach my team to play better. There is a chess match involved here. But right now I got to get my team playing my A-B game rather than the C game and then worry about the chess match."
Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin, on Barry starting: "It was a trick Pop was trying to pull. That's playoff basketball."
So Karl gets all the credit for this brilliant move the last year, eh?

I remember Karl saying that, but I don't think it was because Karl really though Hedo was struggling. I got the impression almost that he thought Manu was not really a starter or was not getting the job done (poor shooting or whatever it was that they mentioned about his stats). I remember him saying that any 2 guard can get 15 points as a starter or whatever, but that the Spurs missed his energy off the bench.
Again he was sort of propping and dissing him at the same time. The season was too early to call Hedo a bust at that point, so I doubt that had much to do with it.
He said it at the Orlando game I beleive.
Anyhoo, Karl always had a habit of bringing guys off the bench (in Seattle) for major minutes. He had kind of a platoon system as well. Kemp never saw HUGE minutes and was their best player at times. He also played Rickey Pierce off the bench who was their best scorer in 1992-93.
Whats up with KMart giving all those pity excuses for their loss.
So if that is the case, shouldn't the Denver organization be pissed saying,
"Thanks alot you lost us game 2 Mfer."
I'm pretty sure a lot of people were considering the option before Karl said anything. There was talk around here about starting Hedo and bringing Manu off the bench seemingly right after the trade was made.
Karl has a history of needing to put himself out front and get credit for everything. One of the problems he's had with players.
Karl is what he is. An ego-driven self appointed great coach. Wait until the players start tuning him out in a couple years, like they did in Seattle and Milwaukee. He has good ideas and good coaching x's and o's; but his self-centeredness will almost certainly keep him from elevating himself to the ranks of the truly great.
he never said he was taking credit for it..he just thought it was funny .
I would think it would be quite funny if i told him that last year, and then i'm coaching against him and he pulls that move, no?
Is it me or does Karl look like that monster "HEEYYY YOU GUYYYS" from the GOONIES?
I don't see what he finds funny about it.
If it's a move he expected, then why did the Nuggets get blown out by 28 pts?!?
If anything, this shows that Karl is an absolute Moron.
It sounds like he knew it was a good move a year ago, and still hasn't thought of a way to counteract it!![]()
funny like in a weird kinda way i guess..notfunny.
George Karl is a pompous ass.
OT- my favorite post of a nugget's fan was when one of you guys referred to Boykins as Earl Baggins.
Didn't George Karl play Sloth in that movie "The Goonies"?
Looks like I'm not the only one who thinks so
