    I already see it. "I won't take this seriously since you didn't put Joe Montana here." Well then, sit back and let me tell you about the best player you've never heard of.

    Poindexter may have been the best safety I've ever seen in college, and that includes Mays, Berry, and Thomas from recently. He could hit like a freight train and was fast enough to cover anyone in the nation one-on-one if need be. He played linebacker, corner, safety, rover - whatever. He was better than either of the Barber twins, who were there at the same time. Poindexter was an All American following his junior year and faced a very tough decision to return as a senior to Virginia. I've hung out in Charlottesville before, and I can see why arguably the biggest man on campus made that decision. It's like they dumped all the best parts of Austin into a remote corner of Virginia and made everyone promise to keep it a secret.

    Well, the Hoos started the year in the top ten and were probably going to win the ACC - an unfathomable thought three years prior, when the Hoos beat Florida State for the first loss the Seminoles ever had in that conference. Ever. (FSU joined the ACC in 1991.) And Poindexter was their heart and soul, racking up yet another All-American season in relative obscurity, a sure bet 1st round NFL draft pick.

    They were playing a mediocre NC State team when Poindexter made a routine tackle and tore three ligaments. Virginia slipped out of the national spotlight and Poindexter tried to make a go of it in the NFL, but never got anywhere past some special teams. He was named an All-American but that play ended his collegiate career.

    Texas got the absolute kicked out of them in 1996 in Charlottesville, and Poindexter must have brought Ricky down ten times himself. I remembered the guy from the year before in Austin, when Dawson had to kick a field goal from damn near Salado to pull out a win, and knew UT had to figure out a way to handle him next year. Needless to say, they didn't.

    =====================================

    Also considered: Joe Montana, Notre Dame.

    Clausen wore 7.

    If we are talking strictly college..I would choose Carson Palmer...better stats and a Heisman Trophy.

    Dex was an animal. I could easily have seen him making a Bob Sanders type NFL impact if he hadn't destroyed every ligament that even considered attaching to his knee.

    I have a bunch going on right now and haven't been around much lately. I should have 4-6 up by the weekend.

    Anthony Poindexter is a good choice I like the underratedness of the pick and you can't argue against Joe Montana, but Carson Palmer should at least be in consideration having one the Heisman Trophy and all.
