They can't really do a "panel" either, so there isn't really a legit method for picking POTD..
For the record, Barkley, Smith, JVG and Mark Jackson all picked Duncan as POTD when they were asked before..

there can only be 2 players in the running: timmy and kobe
saying that, it should be timmy, as he made SA more consistent and won 3 les in the decade beeing the #1 guy on the team. furthermore he didnt ask for a trade and so on...beeing the perfect teammate...Saying that I'm pretty sure, if you made a poll among the Lakers locker, a lot of these guys would secretly vote for timmy and not kobe!
By the way, what's with this ing fan voting lately. Robinson wins the dunk contest, TMac (almost) and Iverson as all star starters, the all decade in general, and now Tim Duncan with 8% of votes for player of the decade, behind even someone who wasn't in the NBA until '03 who in his lone finals appearance got swept by TD's team... Do we need much more proof, or isn't it clear to everyone now that casual basketball 'fans' are some of the dumbest mother ers in the planet?
Next thing you know we're handing over Hall of Fame voting to these intellectuals

LOL thank GOD fans did not get to vote for that SI thing where they had Tim as the best of the decade! Fans are either kids or idiots who never saw Timmay play in his prime or just forget how great he was (Still is though).

TNT wrapped up its coverage of the NBA All-Star Game by naming its player of the decade last weekend, and for the purposes of this discussion, the network gave fans with Internet access the responsibility of naming the winner.
After a million votes were cast, the overwhelming choice wasn't Shaquille O'Neal — the most powerful interior force this league has seen since Wilt Chamberlain — and nope, it wasn't Tim Duncan, who arguably turned the San Antonio Spurs from doormat to a dynasty over the last 10 years.
Kobe Bryant was the pick. Not a horrible choice considering his body of work, but we're talking about fans who were mostly going to click the name of their favorite player, anyway.
The Black Mamba happens to be my favorite player for reasons I've discussed ad nauseam over the last several years. He's the closest thing we have to Michael Jordan in today's game.
With that said, it doesn't mean Bryant should have been picked as the runaway winner for player of the decade.
Fifty-four percent of the votes? Not taking anything away from Kobe, who did capture four championships in the decade, but this vote was a huge diss not only to Shaq — a three-time NBA Finals MVP, who got 13 percent of the vote — but more so to Duncan, who finished fourth with a measly 8 percent of the vote.
Shaq carried those Lakers teams. He was Batman to Kobe's Robin, and teams loaded up with centers and power forwards to bang away at the L.A. big man, who was the head of the dragon. Kobe developed into the player he was earlier in the decade knowing full well that O'Neal was the one constant that kept that Lakers machine going.
It should also be mentioned that TNT viewers voted LeBron James as the runner-up with 17 percent of the vote. James played only six seasons in the last decade, which lets you know this was more about popularity than anything else.
It's not surprising to see that the top vote-getters — great performers that they are — are also the league's two most marketed players.
"Are you kidding me? Shaq is third?'' TNT analyst Charles Barkley said after the announcement. "It clearly shows the fans don't really know anything. Shaquille O'Neal and Tim Duncan are the two players of the decade."
A studio panel that included Hall of Fame forward Kevin McHale, Kenny Smith and Chris Webber shared Barkley's sentiment, while "Inside the NBA" host Ernie Johnson picked Duncan.
There's nothing wrong with a healthy debate, and Bryant is a great player, but to discount Duncan as little more than an afterthought in the voting is unfair. Kobe's numbers over the decade (averaging 28.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 5.2 assists a game) compare favorably with Duncan's (21.1 points, 11.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists) but Bryant had the benefit of playing with Shaq during three of L.A.'s four le seasons.
I would go with Duncan because he won three les in the decade and David Robinson was around for just one of them. He gets the edge over Shaq because O'Neal's numbers tailed off in the last part of the decade even though he captured a fourth le with the Heat in 2006. Duncan gets the edge over Kobe because Bryant rode shotgun to Shaq earlier on championship teams.
The argument against Duncan is that he isn't an engaging superstar. While Kobe is jumping over Aston Martins in TV commercials, Duncan isn't even the most popular player on his team, happily yielding to Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. He's just one of those lunch-pail guys who never make "SportsCenter's" top 10 plays because their game doesn't scream highlight reel.
The person who invented the phrase "what you see is what you get" must have been speaking of Duncan. Even at this stage of his career, he is giving his team consistent production on 33-year-old legs.
Put him down for 19 points, 11 rebounds and a couple of blocked shots, night in and night out.
Bryant may go down as the second-best player ever to lace up a pair of sneakers, but Duncan is already the greatest power forward in league history, and even if he won't say it, San Antonio's quiet superstar has a legitimate claim as the player of the decade.
