So the Spurs couldn't even give him away, a la Ratliff? He's still on a rookie contract, Pop won't play him, and he'll be a free agent this summer. So why is he still on the Spurs' roster? Makes no sense, especially given that it mattered to the Spurs to dump Ratfliff's tiny contract.

spurs fans need to give it up. mahinmi will not be getting minutes over duncan, blair, mcdyess, and bonner. he will get ratliff's minutes which was zero. so he will get zero minutes.

The Mahinmi situation is weird. Since we will probably lose him--or let him go--in free agency this summer, why didn't Pop simply release him to let him catch on with another team.

What's the point of having him hang around?

He couldn't even earn garbage minutes while Bonner was out. I don't understand why the Spurs stuck with this guy for so long to never give him any type of shot outside the Toros. Something really has to be wrong with a guy of his size and athleticism to never get minutes.

Mahinmi will be gone this summer, and he'd be flat out re ed to sign any new contract the Spurs offered him in the unlikely event that happened.

...or release him just to save some money.

The reason is they still see value in him. They weren't ready to give him away. IMO is he's going to get some playing time soon. They were just waiting for the trade deadline to come and go.

At least, I'm hoping that's the case.

If they saw value in him, they would have given him an extension.

My guess is they wanted to sign him on the cheap to a longer deal and he refused.
His agent and Pop/RC probably sat down and agreed to "play nice", since opening this up to the media, wouldn't be good for either party.

Of course, all of this is just hypothetical, I am just trying to make sense out of a scenario that hasn't made much sense to most on this board.

"What's the point of having him hang around"

exactly. Maybe they offered him around and found no takers?

Anyway, Pop decided months ago to tell Ian he won't be a Spur, and Pop's decisions are etched Jacob-Riis-stone.

Can you imagine the meltdown ST would suffer if Ian is traded, gets playing time and does well? Pops Mensah-bonsu times 100000000000000000000.

The Spurs aren't going to release anyone. They aren't going to buy anyone out. They have 13 players on their roster. Coincidentally, the NBA minimum is 13 players. Get it? Mssr. Mahinmi will look dapper in a suit for the rest of the year.
