I've always been a huge fan of the nba, and I'm aware when there are new rule changes... but ive noticed lately that the clock doesnt stop after a made shot. Did they change something, to make it more like college clock rules? anyone else notice this?

I guess no one else has seen this?

if you take the time thats running off the clock before they bring it in bounds, it adds up to a handful of crucial down the stretch time. or maybe abc and espn have a schedule to keep and wanna quicken up the game alittle which is completely bogus. you have rules for a reason.

The NBA has always played with a running clock until the final two minutes of the fourth quarter and the final minute of the first, second and third quarters. At that time, the clock stops after the ball goes through the hoop and doesn't start again until somone touches the ball after it is inbounded.

being a bit nit picky, the game has always gone that way since I remember watching in the 70s. it's just that no one is anal enough to point it out as being a problem

Well it's in the rulebook as timvp said. It's running clock except for the last minute of quarters 1-3 and last two minutes of the 4th quarter or OT. It's been this way as long as I can remember.

Here's the excerpt from the rulebook:

    Section V-Stoppage of Timing Devices
    a. The timing devices shall be stopped whenever the official's whistle sounds indicating one of the following:
    (1) A personal or technical foul.
    (2) A jump ball.
    (3) A floor violation.
    (4) An unusual delay.
    (5) A suspension-of-play for any other emergency (no subs utions are permitted.)
    (6) A regular or 20-second timeout.
    b. The timing devices shall be stopped:
    (1) During the last minute of the first, second and third periods following a successful field goal attempt.
(2)During the last two minutes of regulation play and/or overtime(s) following a successful field goal attempt.

    c. Officials may not use official time to permit a player to change or repair equipment.

I used to have the frame by frame of that play on my old computer. The first two frames show him catching the ball at his hip w/ .4 on the clock. The next frame shows the ball up by his head, w/..... 0.4 on the clock. Clock didnt start in time. But what are ya gonna do about it now? Lets just win the le this year!
