The Spurs do.
http://www.probasketballnews.com/story/?storyid=911The agent for Avery Johnson plans to contact the New Orleans Hornets to see if they are interested in obtaining the services of the former Dallas Mavericks coach, sources close to the situation told ProBasketballNews.com on Wednesday.
Johnson is a New Orleans native who has expressed an interest in returning to coaching since being fired by the Dallas Mavericks in 2008. He is represented by Tony Dutt.
In the last 14 months, Johnson declined an offer to become coach of the Memphis Grizzlies and could not come to an agreement to become coach of the Detroit Pistons.
Johnson can be somewhat selective because he is still being paid $4 million a year by the Mavericks and drawing a paycheck as an analyst for ESPN.
Johnson coached the Mavericks from 2004-08, highlighted by a 60-22 record and NBA Finals appearance in the 2005-06 season. He guided the Mavs to a league-best 67-15 mark the following season, but they were upset in the first round of the playoffs by the eighth-seeded Golden State Warriors.
He was fired by Dallas owner Mark Cuban after compiling a 51-31 mark with another opening-round exit in 2007-08, ironically at the hands of the Hornets.
Johnson has a career record of 194-70, becoming the fastest to win 100 games in league history.
Dutt's client list also includes Rashard Lewis and Brandon Bass of the Orlando Magic.
Hornets general manager Jeff Bower fired coach Byron Scott in November following a 3-6 start and took over as coach. Bower is in his 15th season with the organization, having worked his way up from the scouting ranks.
Don't know if want. I'd rather have JVG.
If they want Collison to ever reach his potential, they should stay far away.
Every year since he got fired Avery's been publicly campaigning for jobs. First the Bulls, then the Pistons, now the Hornets. Somehow nobody is interested.
but no, Spur fan says Avery doesn't want a job, he just wants to collect Cuban's money! Then where the do these reports keep coming from?
I wanna see Pauls face when Avery bench him.
Avery is overrated because he had the chance to start his coaching career with a contender.
I want nothing of JVG. His style of coaching isn't conducive to today's NBA. I wouldn't mind Avery. He would be an upgrade over Bower, but I don't think he would be much of an upgrade. I would rather keep Bower as coach for now.
AJ: `` hey, do you want me ``
Hornets: `` no thanks we already have Chris Paul lined up `for the head coach job ``
