So...I was going along, minding my own business, when I suddenly got an alert that looked like Windows Security Center, saying that I had a critical security weakness because "Vista Internet Security 2010" wasn't activated. Before I could do anything about that, "Vista Internet Security 2010" popped up and started scanning my hard drive, apparently finding a boatload of stuff. Since I already have an antivirus that the real Windows Security Center knows about, I closed the program, Googled this "Vista Internet Security 2010", and now it is clear it's a hoax and I've been infected. I have McAfee installed and am currently scanning and I've used Spybot in the past and had good results, but after reading this thread http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147940 I'm not so sure if I should try it again. I'm going to wait for McAfee to finish it's scan but I need a plan.

Also, the main thing different from another time it was infected, is that I keep getting the "IE has stopped working" and "Firefox has stopped working" when I try to get online.

    Thanks

Let the scan finish, then do a system restore.

Why is system restore bs? It appears to have worked but what else would you have done, besides the preventative measures you mentioned?

    I'm glad it helped.

System Restore is greatness. It's the joys of a format minus the time consumption and headache.

Well I'm thankful that it was such an uncomplicated fix---everything I found involved getting into the registry and I am nowhere near that level of skill, or courage

I just recently caught the same virus.

malwarebytes anti-malware Download this and let it run a full scan.

If you still have problems after that runs and deletes/quarantines, then you are probably going to have to d/l ComboFix. Its a very invasive anti-malware program. Read about extensively before using...stupid things like clicking your mouse around while its running (out of impatience) can cause serious problems for you.

I hate using Internet Explorer, because I get almost no protection from malware. This crap has happened to me countless times.
