    Rangers reveal manager's positive test

    By Richard Durrett
    ESPNDallas.com

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Texas Rangers manger Ron Washington apologized Wednesday ahead of a news conference in which team officials confirmed that he had tested positive for cocaine during the 2009 season.

The story was first reported Wednesday by SI.com. Sources told ESPNDallas.com that Washington will not be fired.

Washington, 57, acknowledged that he failed a Major League Baseball drug test last July. The story said he has passed all of his subsequent tests and the Rangers accepted Washington's apology.

"I did make a mistake and I regret that I did it," Washington told SI.com on Tuesday. "I am really embarrassed and I am really sorry."

Washington said he didn't want to give any reason for the cir stances of his drug use, saying it was "going to sound like excuses."

Washington was hired as manager of the Rangers in 2006 to replace Buck Showalter. He was given an extension last year in June that takes him as manager of the club through the 2010 season.

The SI.com story said Washington told the commissioner's office and the Rangers' brass about his cocaine use before the test results came back positive.

"It was the right thing to do,'' Washington said. "I couldn't deal with the result to come back positive and be a shock to those who've shown faith in me."

WTF? That's crazy. He did the right thing about it, and according to the Rangers site he offered his resignation if the team wanted it but they refused and retained him. Smart move to fess knowing this in 2010 won't stay quiet.

meh. tbh i wasn't all that roused by this. i bet there's tons of mlb players and even some managers that do some recreational coke, ron just happened to be unlucky enough to have a random drug test come up the next day.

if he turned out to be a multiple offender, then get rid of him. but he did it, admitted to it, went through the drug program, and hasn't tested positive since. he deserves a second chance.

now if the weight of this affects his performance with the team, then fire his ass. but if the team isn't bothered by it, why should anyone else be bothered by it?

Big deal. I'd be more surprised if he was the only MLB manager or for that matter only head coach in the NBA and NFL to have a little recreation drug use. If it's a chronic problem, a serious addiction, that's one thing. If the guy wants to feel like superman and grind his teeth a couple times a year, big deal. There are far worse things he could be involved in. At the end of the day, it's still about whether he can get the Rangers to win games.

Ron Washington is a good guy who made a mistake. I agree that this is a non-issue
