I was always struck by the way he hustled on D. I know he had a late season injury and I don't know the severity of it. Any thoughts out there on whether or not Memphis is interested in keeping him?

Solid player especially on defense. Idk if he'd fit Pop's system particularly on offense though.

Yeah, that's what I read......he not a particularly good shooter, but neither was Bruce when he arrived. I think if he's in a system that gives him spot up threes and the occasional long two, he'd be free to concentrate on his defense. He's really good and hustles well.

Does anyone know the extent of his injury though?

If we could get him at a reasonably cheap rate (the LLE or less), I would be quite happy to have him on board. In particular, his WP/48 numbers have been spectacular. I think we need to add a non-rookie 2 guard, preferably one with some versatility to also play the 3... Brewer would be a good option, although I suspect he will get more than the LLE and thus be out of our price range. I suspect Sato is a more realistic option (and a better shot, although I would prefer a larger player).

    PG - Parker, Hill, ?Temple?
    SG - Manu, ???, ???
SF - Jefferson, ?Hairston or Gee?, ???
    PF - McDyess, Blair, ???
    C - Duncan, ?Splitter?, ???

Bruce was a 35% 3 point shooter in parts and scraps of five seasons prior to landing in SA, a figure that is twelve percentage points higher than Brewer's career number of 23%. You don't just suddenly shoot 40% from 3 point land for 5 seasons without being a pretty damn good shooter to begin with.

He'd be a good pick up if the Spurs had legitimate 3 point shooters already on the roster. However the Spurs definitely need improvements in defending the perimeter which Brewer should help at but they also need to space the floor.

LA has too much length to try and beat them without being able to hit 3's. even PHX is too much to handle without proper spacing and dagger 3's.

They gave up a first round pick to acquire him. Have to expect that they'll tender the qualifying offer and make him a restricted FA.

Thanks for pointing that out Mel. I completely overlooked that they gave up a first rounder for him. On point once again.

Oh well, back to the drawing board......

Having that potential and actually doing it in game are two completely different things. Upon arrival to the Spurs, Bruce hadn't shot 40% from the arc yet. The fact that he did so once he was here is a testament to his work ethic and the staff working to his strengths.

So I'll ask the question straight up: If Brewer were to come here and shot 37% from the arc for five seasons, what sort of critique would you give his shooting then?......Because right now, he's not a good shooter either.

Brewer is an insurance for mamphis in case they decide to let Gay go to another team...
In case they retain him, the insurance could be no more necessary.
So, for his rights, what could be the price ? it could be enough our 2nd draft choice ?

It looks like Memphis won't make a QO for him.

Even if he has some flaws (lack of a 3 point shoot and his injury), Brewer would be a damn good gamble for the LLE.

Me likey. All we would need then is a good defensive minded center and we're set.

    1. Agree that Brewer would be great for the LLE

    2. This is why they're the Grizzlies. Give up a future first round pick to rent a player for two months. Remarkable.

Yep, it's really strange that Memphis doesn't make Brewer restricted.

We will see if it confirmed but they have made today a press release saying that Gay will be restricted and nothing about Brewer.

His daddy was a Spur, why not?

In all seriousness, he would be hard to pass up on if he can be had for the LLE. Not necessarily a great fit offensively speaking, but he'd be hard to pass up on.

    Memphis . . .

unfortunatly the spurs will get to only choose from the "scraps" left over from FA. I would expect brewer to get more than lle from a team who is looking to surround their star FA pick-ups. If I am a non-star FA, I wait until the stars sign and then go after whatever is left over to surround these guys and try to use this as leverage to round a roster.

I'm not surprised the Grizzlies cut him loose. Considering what they gave up to acquire him, it ends up being another in the long line of stupid moves by them, but when you factor in how cheap they are, the fact that they want to keep Gay and already have considerable depth on the wings, this makes sense. If they can keep Gay, they have him, Mayo, Henry and Young, to make up their wing rotation. Depth options include combo forward Carroll and combo guard Vasquez.

I'm not sure Brewer would be a fit with the Spurs. While he's more of an SG than an SF, he's certainly legit SF size and though he gambles for steals more than he should, he is a solid defender and has every physical tool imaginable to be a lock down wing defender. Too bad he can't shoot worth a lick. If you thought Jefferson hurt the Spurs spacing, Brewer would make the big three feel damn near claustrophobic.
