Matt Bonner can’t believe his luck. The little brother he used to tie to a basketball pole as a kid is playing up the road for the Spurs D-League team, the Austin Toros.
Luke Bonner can’t believe his luck. The big brother who used to feed him chocolate to trigger painful, allergic reactions is playing down the road in San Antonio.
For the first time since childhood, the Bonner brothers – five years apart – are close enough to watch each other play, trade pranks and exchange elbows, knees and body checks in a regular game of one-on-one.
"We’re very close," says Matt, who stands 6-10 but lost his height advantage to Luke years ago.
"I was the best man in his wedding," says Luke, who stands 7-1 and enjoys banging against his older brother.
Back home in Concord, N.H., Luke was the annoying, tag-along brother Matt used to torment. Today, Luke is the bigger, younger brother who, at last, plays for the same organization as Matt – Spurs Sports & Entertainment.

They're like bigger, goofier versions of the Barrys.
First there were the Bruise Brothers of the 80-81 season. Now, Spurs fans will experience the era of the Bonner Brothers.![]()
Why need Splitter when you could have two Bonners?
If he can shoot the three, he has a future with the Spurs.
Maybe we could fuse them together and make one good player.
Tim and Dave were the Twin Towers. Matt and Luke can be the Ginger Towers.
allergic to chocolate? that sux
A Splitter between Bonners? The difference is finer than a Blair... Interesting...
Luke isn't red-haired and really doesn't look much like Matt at all.
I don't expect Luke to play much at all this next round of the playoffs. Alonzo Gee is more likely to play center for the Toros.
ship them both back to new england. popovich's hard-on for bonner is going to screw the spurs in the playoffs.
I found this picture and you're right he doesn't look like Bonner. For some reason, I pictured that red head guy that gets camera time when Bonner makes a shot during the Spurs home games.
