I got into an argument with someone over Duncan's contract.

Could he have gotten more elsewhere or even in SA?

I know Bowen/Tony/Rasho/Manu either were offered more elswhere OR would have been able to get more elsewhere.

He couldn't have gotten more money elsewhere, but he re-up'd early causing him to make a little less money than he would have if he would have would have just played out his last year before signing an new contract extension.

The only money he cost himself was the remaining year that he opted out of. If he plays that year, and signs a new deal for 7 years, he has 8 contract years. He opted out, and resigned for 7 years.

The CBA is skewed to give teams an edge in re-signing their own players, with 12.5% raises as opposed to 10% if you switch teams, and 7 years, as opposed to only 6 years if you switch teams.

He could have made a little more but only from the Spurs. Kori explained it much better than I could have.

was 7yrs/ 122 mill the most he could have gotten under the CBA?
It was because Tim hadn't gotten a bloated contract before the 1999 lockout. The 1999 lockout brought us the era of max salaries indexed to the cap number. Tim was still on his rookie deal in 1999, through the lockout, and after. So when Tim signed, he didn't get an exception to the max like other guys who had huge contracts (KG, Shaq) did. Thus, when Tim re-upped in 2000, his best deal was the max the CBA would allow for a player with 3 years of experience.

When he re-signed again in the summer of 2003, he signed for the max available to a 6 year player. The CBA allows a player with 6 years of experience to make the higher of $9 million or 25% of his team's cap. A player with 7 years of experience can make the higher of $11 million or 30% of his team's cap. The one year difference in signing in the summer of '03, rather than the summer of '04 cost Tim a little more than $2 million in the first year and a bit more each year as his 12.5% raises add up.

I am trying to remember why Tim's deal in '00 was structured with an opt-out after year 6 and not year 7, or why Tim chose to opt-out in the summer of 2003 -- I think it had something to do with maximizing the Spurs caproom that summer in an effort to lure another big name (Kidd, O'Neal, Brand) to SA, but I couldn't say for certain.

But yeah, Tim could be making a bit more.

Offered more what? The Magic couldn't pay him more per year than the Spurs did. The Spurs paid him more per season than the Magic could have even if they wanted to.
