The Signal newspaper of Santa Clarita, Calif. 5/7/05

News organizations around the world, citing anonymous Army officials who refused to give their names, reported Thursday that President Bush approved the demotion of Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski to colonel because she failed to properly supervise guards who abused detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in the fall of 2003.

Two weeks earlier, quoting similarly anonymous Army sources, the same world-wide news organizations reported that the Army inspector general was holding only one top officer - Karpinski - accountable for the abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib.

Around the world, particularly in the Arab world, the stories sent the message that finally, the United States was holding a commander responsible. Finally, someone in a position of authority would be punished. Finally there would be justice.

The trouble is, it wasn't true.

Oh, the Army inspector general singled out Karpinski for disciplinary action, all right. And yes, Bush demoted Karpinski on the basis of the Army IG's recommendation.

But it wasn't for Abu Ghraib. It was unrelated.

In fact, the Army inspector general - a summary of whose report was released Thursday - exonerated her of any wrongdoing at Abu Ghraib, right along with the rest of the generals in the chain of commend.

"Though Brig. Gen. Karpinski's performance of duty was found to be seriously lacking," the summary said, "the investigation team determined that no action or lack of action on her part contributed specifically to the abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib."

What was that that Karpinski was really demoted for then if not Abu Gharib?

President George W Bush ordered the demotion of Brigadier General Janis Karpinski, the former commander of the Abu Ghraib prison, after an army investigation found her guilty of dereliction of duty and shoplifting, the army said.

Only in America. Torture prisoners, smear them with feces, lead them around in dog collars, smear fake menstrual blood all over them, but if we catch ya lifting cosmetics we're gonna bust ya!

New developments in the Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski have emerged...

Demoted General Tells Newspaper She Was Never Arrested in Alleged Shoplifting Incident
    The Associated Press

    SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) -
The highest-ranking officer punished in the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal says she was never charged or even arrested for shoplifting and the Army only brought the allegation so it could demote her.

Former Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski, whose Army Reserve unit was in charge of the prison during the abuse of Iraqi inmates, gave details of how the allegation arose in an interview published Friday by The Signal of Santa Clarita.

    - snip -

Karpinski was demoted to colonel last week after the Army's inspector general investigated allegations against her of dereliction of duty, making a "material misrepresentation" to investigators, failure to obey a lawful order and shoplifting.

The Army said only the shoplifting and dereliction of duty allegations were substantiated.

"They had nothing about Abu Ghraib to use against me," she said. "So they pull this flaky allegation out and use it to demote me? ... To save face? To mislead the American public yet again?"

Just heard about the mechanic who they're charging with desertion because he refused to ship out pending a ruling on his CO claim. He is also being charged with Larceny because the Army claims he ripped them off for hazardous duty pay they paid him while he was still stateside. His attorney states that when he figured out he was getting pay he wasn't en led to, he informed his superiors. Bet they lost any paperwork existing on THAT.

These allegations are so infantile, they MUST be coming from Rummy himself...
