Mavs C Dampier fined $35,000 for criticizing refs

Mavericks center Erick Dampier has been fined $35,000 for publicly criticizing game officials.

Dampier’s punishment, announced Monday, was for comments he made following a 94-90 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night.

NBA commissioner David Stern said last week the league will consider suspending players from playoff games for griping about the officials. Dampier is the first player punished since then, receiving the same $35,000 levied against others.

They must have been considering the suspension, and which team it would benefit more.

Too bad he couldn't be suspended forcing Haywood to be a starter.

If they REALLY want to stop the criticizing of the refs, it's easy. And it would make the NBA even more fun too, trick up the penalties for criticizing the ref's.

Like make Dampier go draw a paper from a hat that tells him his punishment. Televise it at halftime too. Make it include every degree of punishment. Maybe $100. Maybe $35,000. Or the Mark Cuban special 1 MILLION DOLLARS.

I bet nobody would criticize refs again. Except Cuban of course, he can afford it.

They ought to fine a % of his salery. Fine him 10%. That would get players and coaches to shut up.

If you are going to complain, do it during the game, that is when it matters.

Considering he'll probably play all of 8 minutes before fouling out, ain't no thang.

Well he also challenged his teammates to "attack the rim" more.
    Like he's ever done that.
Dumpier is Zero for 7 in the series.
The starting center for the Mavs has not made one FG so far. 0% Ha.

Weak tea from David Stern. He sure talks a big game.

Dampier supposedly wasn't aware of Stern's suspension comments so I can understand this.

However if he does it again in his career, his future coach will thank Stern for suspending his scrub ass.

You mean the rest of the entire playoffs? So, you're asking for a one game suspension.

Even though it's fun ridiculing the Mavs the refs often do suck. I don't think stern or the refs should be above criticism. Trusting Stern to take care of everything gave us the Donaghy scandal.
