That and Barnes usually stays in the LA area because he played for UCLA. It all depends on what the Magic do. If they win the Championship, they will resign Barnes, if they don't they might make a few changes and Barnes might be out of the picture.
Now an unrestricted free agent.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)—Forward Matt Barnes(notes) says he will opt out of the final year of his contract with the Orlando Magic to become a free agent.
Barnes had said for months he would likely make the move, hoping to get a long-term deal to return to Orlando. He made his intentions official Monday after the team’s end-of-season meeting.
Barnes worked his way into the Magic’s starting lineup this season, averaging 6.4 points per game in the playoffs. The defensive stopper’s primary role was to guard opponents’ best perimeter player.
The 30-year-old forward has played for seven teams in seven seasons in the NBA. He prefers to remain with the Magic.
Barnes hopes he impressed the Magic enough for them “to bring me back and give me something decent.”
Think it most likely has something to do with his at ude. Guy has a real short fuse and isn't exactly good for locker room moral.
I wouldn't mind bringing him in though, but he will be getting payed a lot more than what we can/will offer.
If he's so good, why have 7 teams let him go? Yes, he plays hard but he does dumb things and is a thug... one of the reasons I like the Spurs is because character counts with them when it comes to drafting, signing, and trading for players. I'd say pass on Barnes.
considered a questionable locker room guy
good on-ball defender, but struggles with team defense
thinks he's a much better shooter than he is
Are the Spurs interested in Matt Barnes?

In a recent interview with the Orlando Sentinel, Orlando Magic's free-agent, Matt Barnes, stated he was once sought after by the San Antonio Spurs prior to the 2009-2010 NBA season and, according to him, still feels he is on the Spurs' list as well as on other NBA team's list:
Before signing with the Magic last summer, Barnes said the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs were among the heavyweights who showed interest and he feels he's still on their lists.
Barnes, a small-forward, averaged 8.8 points and 5.5 rebounds in 81 appearances for the Magic. He was also the Magic's go to defender often called upon to defend the opposing team's best perimeter player.
Barnes does say he would like to return to the Magic but don't be surprised this is more posturing in order to get the Magic to resign him come July 1.

granted he isn't what the Spurs need SF/Shooter, he can defend and did a good job guarding Dirk when he was in Golden State.
He would be a good addition because he is a decent defender and can shoot from the outside.
Spurs wont have any money for Barnes if they sign Splitter. Barnes is not going anywhere for the LLE.
plus, the guy is a .
? how do you know?
IMO he wouldn't hesitate to sign if he get's a BAE offer, especially if the 2nd year is guaranteed. he once overplayed his cards in 2008 and finally had to sign for the minimum with the Suns. and the Magic payed him 1.6 million last year, he opted out and left another 1.6 million on the table. IMO he is exactly looking for the full LLE (from Magic or another team), which means 4 million as opposed to 1.6 million in guaranteed money.
he is a head case, but this is well reported for years. Spurs tried to sign him several times, so obviously they think they can control his at ude.
fact is, he does offer some of the things the Spurs need. if they think they can work him into the system, he could actually become pretty valuable.
if the Spurs can't sign someone like James Jones or Rasual Butler, he is worth consideration. they also signed guys labeled as "perfect team mates" and "coaches dreams" who finally turned out as quitters. (talking about you RM junior and also you Fin). at least Barnes could only surprise positively in this regard.
a lot of tweets within the last couple of hours keep saying this: "Per MT of ESPN radio: Matt Barnes telling friends in LA he wants to sign w/ Lakers"
I think he's always wanted to play in LA or west coast.
Magic GM Otis Smith is not amused.
I asked Smith if it bothered him that Barnes Tweets about not getting an offer from the Magic.
He thought about it for a second.
“Wonder why he hasn’t gotten an offer,” Smith said. “If he stopped Tweeting, he might get one. … My preference is to not have your business all over the internet.”

And he wonders why he's always working off a minimum contract.
Welcome to Miami, Matt.![]()
He would be perfect for the Spurs. He brings toughness and a fearlessness that our team needs. You can put him on Kobe, Dirk, Lebron, whoever...he thrives on those matchups. He's an extremely fierce compe or that plays with an edge. I like that. He can sometimes draw techs and flagrants but he's maturing and learning to stay under control much better. He'll probably get something bigger than the LLE. If somehow we don't use the full MLE on Splitter, perhaps we can combine the LLE with the remainder of the MLE to get Barnes. Not sure if that can be done but we should definitely have him on our radar.
Exceptions cannot be combined...and the max amount of years for the LLE is two years.
Barnes has contacted the Warriors and wants to return. (he obviously didn't offer to sign for the minimum)

Matt Barnes has contacted the Warriors, but sources said agreeing on a free-agent deal is probably a longshot.
The 6-foot-7, 226-pound forward averaged 8.8 points and 5.5 rebounds for Orlando last season and acted as the team's defensive irritant. Barnes, 30, fits many of the Warriors' needs, and general manager Larry Riley says the squad could add some maturity to its youthful roster.
However, "chasing that story is probably a waste of time" because of financial concerns, a league source with knowledge of the conversations said Sunday.

No shock here. A former employer of Matt Barnes with no interest in making him part of their basketball team again. It's pretty obvious that this guy is a cancer and should be avoided.
a player with his size, athleticism and talent would easily get offers in the 3years/10 million range IMO.
the fact that he didn't get such offers for years should be prove that his reputation around the league is not exactly intriguing.
I would give Rasual Butler the full nickel and dime tour and then offer him the full LLE for two years. If he doesn't bite then Barnes could very well be my next stop for the same.
Orlando just signed Quentin Richardson, does that mean Barnes is more available?
No. Orlando had no interest in Barnes.
I never realized how cheap he has been playing for. I just believed he was worth more than 1.8/yr. If the Spurs can get him with a 2 year deal worth the LLE than they need to be on the phone right now![]()
