The Spurs are the team to beat, according to the experts who actually have a lot of $$$$ riding on this shindig, unlike some of you, or the various talking heads in the media, like Bill Walton or Peter Vescey.

Up to date Vegas odds on winning the championship:

    Dallas Mavericks 40-1

    Detroit Pistons 18-5

    Indiana Pacers 250-1

    Miami Heat 14-5

    Phoenix Suns 7-2

    San Antonio Spurs 17-10

    Seattle Sonics 150-1

    Washington Wizards 250-1

Spurs are almost a 2-1 favorite over Phoenix.

I'm surprised the Heat and Pistons don't have better odds... esp the Pistons!

Looks like Wizards and Pacers have better chance of getting the whole team struck by lightning.

Jim do you have any info on how often historically in the NBA playoffs the favorite pays out?

    Yes I do.

Last year the Spurs were the favs to win it all at 2-1

    Minn was 2nd at 3-1

Indy was next at 4-1 and Detroit was 6-1

In Chicago's heyday, they were favs by quite a lot, in fact you had to bet $700 to win $200 on them at one point.

The Lakers were 1-2 favs in their 2nd championship.

I bet on SA at midseason at 1-1 which turned out to be a bad bet, because if I held out til now, I would get more bang for my buck.

I think so, because the Spurs were underdogs in midseason.

I bet on SA in Vegas that year to win it all in March of that year, and got 6-1 odds.

    I bet $50 and won $300.

When you look at the four best teams right now, it is normal that the Spurs are favored: they have everything to win a championship. They have the experience that Suns and Heat don't, the deepness that Detroit and Phoenix lacks of and a defensive mindset.
It is Spurs le to lose.

Detroit has depth + defensive mindset also. I'd be surprised if either Spurs or Pistons don't win it all.

Am I missing something? Does Vegas really believe the Heat have a better chance than the Pistons?

Vegas odds reflect who is getting the most action in bets. That's all. Detroit proved last year that it doesn't necessarily have any relevance to who is actually going to win the championship. In my mind Detroit, SA, Miami, and Phoenix all have the same chance. I think Detroit and San Antonio may have slightly better teams than Miami and Phoenix, but the home-court advantage evens it out.
