Octuplets' mom unveils spay-neuter banner

Wearing a tight red t-shirt reading "Fight Breedism," Nadya Suleman walked out of her front door Wednesday morning where a boisterous mob of paparazzi, TV cameras and a dozen or so other reporters awaited the newest spokeswoman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
PETA is paying Suleman $5,000 and all the veggie dogs and burgers she and her 14 kids can eat for one month in exchange for her hanging a banner on her Madonna Lane house in La Habra that reads: "Don't let your dog or cat become an 'Octomom' – Always spay or neuter."
Members of the media were invited to the unveiling. When Suleman emerged from her house, photographers began yelling her name and shouting at her to turn their way. She posed for photos and then read a statement.
"All my children have a loving home but the sad fact is that 8 million dogs and cats end up in animal shelters each year, half of which are euthanized," she said. "You can help solve the animal overpopulation crisis by saying no to octo-cats and octo-dogs. Always spay and neuter."
Suleman was wearing a t-shirt with a similar message: "Breeding =s killing animals. Never buy."
A dog mascot stood by.
The headline-making mother took a few questions before going back inside to her brood.
Are you just doing this for money? one reporter asked.
Suleman emphatically said she does believe in the cause, but conceded she needed the cash.
PETA proposed the banner to her last month after reading that she was facing foreclosure.
Suleman has since come up with some money to continue making her house payments for the time being, she told Oprah when she went on the daytime talk queen's show last month, but said she has no steady income.
Jeff Czech, Suleman's attorney, said there was some discussion with PETA about having his client pose nude, covered by just an octopus.
Asked how she feels about being poked fun of, Suleman said: "They know my sense of humor, I take everything light heartedly."
The banner, which shows a mother cat with a boatload of kittens, hangs on her house next to her front door. It will be taken down in one month, per city ordinance.
A handful of lookiloos turned out for the banner unveiling. Czech said that since his client's appearance on "Oprah," public opinion has improved and neighbors seem more understanding.
"This banner will help countless homeless cats and dogs by ensuring that people get the lifesaving message to always spay and neuter," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Plus, what parent wouldn't appreciate a month's supply of healthy, delicious foods that kids love — like veggie dogs and veggie burgers?"
