The Wizards’ good fortune in winning the lottery put Gilbert Arenas’ future into even more uncertainty than already promised. Washington insists the Arenas is still in the team’s plans, but you don’t draft John Wall if you’re not going to let him handle the ball all the time and run the offense. It’s unclear what role Arenas would play in the team’s new lineup.

Then again, there’s always the chance that the Wizards will realize things are really complicated and try to deal Arenas. If that’s the case, they might have an interested trade partner, according to Chad Ford:

Arenas won’t be easy to move. He has four years and $80 million left on his contract, has battled injuries the past few seasons, and is coming off an embarrassing scandal. But he isn’t impossible to trade, either. He’s still one of the best scorers in the league, and if the Wizards are willing to take back some junk in return, they could probably move him.

One team I’m told will have interest if it strikes out in free agency? The New York Knicks might consider swapping Eddy Curry (who will be in the last year of his contract) for Arenas.

While Arenas would come to New York for Curry and not count towards the double-max cap space the team cleared for this summer, it’s hard to imagine the New York faithful getting too excited about picking up a player coming off a major scandal during an offseason that was supposed to transform the franchise into the league’s city on a hill.

Look, this is all rampant speculation right now and it’s unlikely this trade will happen. But the rumor gives you both an idea of how far Arenas has fallen and just how difficult it will be for the Wizards to deal him for anything resembling value. Arenas still might return to prominence, if not exactly s om. If all the Wizards can get back is an expiring contract like Curry, maybe it’s worth holding on to Gil and hoping their new backcourt manages to work out.

Of course an Arenas-Curry trade would affect the cap space available to the Knicks. The difference in salaries is about 6.4M for next year. The Knicks would see their cap space reduced by that amount and would no longer be able to sign two max free agents.
