The tech sector, using H1b visas @65K/year, and their lobbyists would fight this because the tech/science sector needs skilled, educated, and cheap, eg, Indians, for tech and scientific work that the American schools aren't providing, or are providing Amreican grads who (greedily) expect more salary than Indian grads.
and what about the low-end manual workers, the bulk of the illegal immigrants now, who make $10/hour, and are unemployed and des ute South Of The Border? How do they afford $50K or more to get into earn $10/hour?
Unskilled immigrants certainly have British-styple points in that the unskilled are needed because unskilled Americans won't pick fruit and veg, products which are "economically desirable".
The market, the market, the oh so sacred infallible market that provides all solutions.
