Amar'e Stoudemire has opted out of his contract, worth $17.6M, and will become an unrestricted free agent.
His agent, Happy Walters, confirmed the news to Yahoo.
“The offer isn’t where it needs to be yet, but we’ve had a good open, cordial dialogue with the Suns," said Walters. "Like Dirk Nowitzki and Paul Pierce, we’re exercising the opt out and we’ll see what presents itself for Amar’e on the market.”

since stoudemire has been in the league longer, his max contract is actually higher than lebron/wade/bosh. i wonder who will give him that. maybe the knicks or the bulls.

There's a chance he turned down a 5 year 107M deal from Phoenix, if he did that's really in stupid since that's more than he'll get from any other team.

No, it's exactly the same. Max salary for 7, 8, and 9 year vets is 30% of the salary cap. It goes up to 35% for players with 10 years or more like Dirk and Pierce.

it has something to do with your previous salary as well. from an espn article:
A player can sign for up to 105 percent of his previous salary, even if it's above the league-wide maximum. This is how the $16,568,908 value of the MC was derived -- James, Bosh and Wade each made $15,779,912 in 2009-10. But some players like Amare Stoudemire had higher salaries in 2009-10, so their 2010-11 maximum salary is also higher. Stoudemire's maximum salary is $18,770,405, so a franchise hoping to land the former Sun might need to clear extra cap room.

You're right, although ESPN got the numbers wrong. They used the 2010-11 salary that Amare would have received had he not opted out as the basis for the calculation instead of his 2009-10 salary.

So while LeBron and Co. would start at the 16.6M ESPN cites, Amare would start at 17.2M.

yeah i was wondering why the salary was so much higher for stoudemire since has only been in the league a year longer than bosh/wade/lebron.

Gambo is a got but he's connected to the team so anything he said is semi-legit. What a stupid trade that would be for Phoenix.

Gambo has spewed more useless, meaningless out of his ass over the past few years then anyone could possibly keep track of. I think .05 % of his "rumors" or "tips" have come true. Hes is primarily a Sarver yes-man, so it is likely this rumor has been leaked with intention.

I say his rumors are semi-legit because he is buried so deep in Sarver's asshole that he does get inside info from Sarver. Most of his rumors are wrong, but I think almost all of them are based off something he heard from inside the organization.

Ya it is likely that this rumor is being seeded to get other teams discussing Amare sign and trades, as well as to amp up his perceived value.

These rumors are seeing light now since Amare told them to get lost. It's a face saving measure, and typical of the process here in such instances.
