If it makes Bush or the U.S. look bad or suffer, the media is all for putting it out...unchecked.
It's only when the Liberal Left gets busted that they want five witnesses, signed affidavits and a confession before they'll believe or report.
NewsweekWASHINGTON (Reuters) - Newsweek magazine on Sunday said it may have erred in a May 9 report that said U.S. interrogators desecrated the Koran at Guantanamo Bay, and apologized to victims of deadly violence sparked by the article.
The weekly news magazine said in its May 23 edition that the original source of the allegation was not sure where he saw the assertion that at least one copy of the Koran was flushed down a toilet in an attempt to get detainees to talk.
"We regret that we got any part of our story wrong, and extend our sympathies to victims of the violence and to the U.S. soldiers caught in its midst," Editor Mark Whitaker wrote in the magazine's latest issue, due to appear on U.S. newsstands on Monday.
Geez, you would think that Newsweek would check their sources before making such inflammitory statements in their mag. Especially since the insueing violence had led to the death of hunreds and a call to holy war by 300 Afghan mullahs...
ReutersAfghan clerics threaten Muslim holy war over Koran
A group of Afghan Muslim clerics threatened on Sunday to call for a holy war against the United States if it fails to hand over in three days military interrogators reported to have desecrated the Koran.
The warning came after 16 Afghans were killed and more than 100 hurt last week in the worst anti-U.S. protests across the country since U.S. forces invaded in 2001 to oust the Taliban for sheltering Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda network.
The clerics in the northeastern province of Badakhshan said they wanted President Bush to handle the matter honestly "and hand the culprits over to an Islamic country for punishment."
"If that does not happen within three days, we will launch a jihad against America," said a statement issued by about 300 clerics, referring to Muslim holy war, after meeting in a mosque in the provincial capital, Faizabad.

I fear this will severely damage America's faith in Freedom of the Press.
Idiots. I hope they're hit with a fatal wave of subscription cancellations.

Yeah, Drudge causes riots.![]()
I'm truly surprised more Americans aren't incensed over Newsweek's irresponsibility. This is the CBS memos with 15 people killed! And, it could still get worse...
Newsweek's nonretraction-retraction is going to continue to cause problems and is just as bad as CBS's nonretraction-retraction in the Rather story, except this one is dangerous. They should have said that they retract the story because they do not have any reason to know that it is true. The press are not in the business of reporting what might be true, what could be true if only they know more. The press are in the business of reporting what they know is true. Aren't they?
This Isikoff has singlehandedly turned US triumph in Afghanistan into a total disaster. Now, thanks to one Bush-hating reporter (google Isikoff if you doubt his intentions,) the recidivist Taliban-Pathans of southeast Afghanistan once again have an issue to de-legitimize the Karzai-U.S. alliance.
Really, I don't want to hear another word about the superior "responsibility" of Big Media. Not one more word.
This is America, and we all have freedom of speech, and nobody will riot in front of the offices of Time, Newsweek, or Penguin publishers over this new outrage. So cash your checks with pride, Viv. You too, Eric. The prisoners in Guantanamo may or may not get over the shame of being teased by women in thongs, but 15 Afghanis are certainly and permanently dead.
This latest journalistic train wreck is just ugly. Dead Afghanis, calls for jihad, threats of more violence, Islamists rejecting the Newsweek retraction… This can still get worse, and there will be no laughs in this one.
Thanks Isikoff...due to your irresponsible reporting (born of a desire to embarrass and discredit the Bush administration and undermine the President's foreign policy) Americans abroad have just another reason to look over their shoulders while walking down the street.
I think the only way to rectify this is to put Isikoff on assignment in the rat-infested terrorist holes of Iraq and wait for his orange jumpsuit video to be released. Prick.

Why don't we put him in a Gitmo cell between two of the most rabid terrorists with only a Koran for reading and wiping.
"If that does not happen within three days, we will launch a jihad against America,"
get in line.
can we not turnover some of the idiots that let this kind of story out in the 1st place.
This reaction just shows you how far they are from being "democratic" or ever will be....I flush the bible down the toilet..what's going to happen...nothing. I do realize that what has transpired is de able but killing and murdering in the visage of God goes against the purpose of the Koran or Bible for that matter.
I'm sorry, your argument doesn't wash.
The Japanese were similarly devoted to the Emperor before Nagasaki and Hiroshima were vaporized. And, even then, it took the Emporer himself shedding his deification before the Japanese started to come around...
Hard? Sure. Impossible? Obviously not. And that was only 60 years ago.
Well...before we depict the Middle East as the next great economic power house....
I don't really think the Muslim's "coming around" after a few well placed bombs will spur them into pro-american rallies. This is all based on Religion and nothing more....the Japanese prior and after WW2 still have their faith based dogma very well intact. Can Iraq attain this....sure they can...but before you assume that it's easy talk with someone from that region.
It was deemed impossible in 1944 Japan.
Hey "RO" what the don't you understand by my post....
I understand your post fine.
BBC(From BBC)
Hardline Islamic parties in Pakistan say an apology by a US magazine over a story about a desecration of the Koran is a crude bid to ease Muslim anger.
Newsweek said US interrogators at Guantanamo Bay flushed a copy of the Koran down a toilet. It now says it erred in reporting the story.
But White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the decision not to issue a full retraction was "puzzling".
snip---
"There have been reports by the prisoners who have been released from Guantanamo Bay of desecration of the holy Koran, and different atrocities perpetrated on them. Therefore, the clarification of Newsweek has no meaning."
I'm sure there's a point in there somewhere...
Care to share?
Seems to me that these claims have been substantiated and resubstantiated. Maybe there are different reasons for the Newsweek retraction.

"This Nbadan fellow seems to know too much...I'll take care of it"

Care to share the credible source of these substantiated and resubstantiated claims of Koran flushing?
Yeah, this Nbadan fellow seems to know stuff of which no one else on earth is aware...including those reportedly involved.
Either way, the damage is done. MSM is such a ing mess. They REALLY need to get their ing together.
Sorry, I missed addressing this little bit of "corroborating" evidence in your post:
I've heard that Gitmo detainees are coordinating their stories of abuse so they seem more credible if and when released...
It happens in Prisons here all the time. Don't like a particular prison guard, get a couple of dozen prisoners to start spreading rumors of corruption or malfeasance.
It's an old ploy.
pretty soon the gitmo detainess will be placing liens on homes
