Why is it only $85M over the 5 years?
Is it because part of it is still on the rookie scale deal and takes care of his RFA year (well below open market value)? Otherwise, I'm assuming he's looking at a max deal 5 years $105M... and would be worth it for sure.

Yeah this contract is still part of the contract when he was a rookie I think.
I believe that is the maximum they can give Durant now. And Durant and OKC both do not want the new CBA affecting them. Money for Durant, and OKC gets to for sure secure Durant now.
imagine this thunder team with the 05 version of fortson + reggie evans, solves their frontline problems...two physical bodies down low doing the dirty work
The 5/85 does not include the 6M he will get this season in the 4th year of his rookie contract, it's for the five years after that.
The reason that he gets 5/85 instead of 5/105 or something similar is a result of how max contracts are defined in the CBA. For players coming off their initial 4yr rookie contract, like KD, the maximum first year salary of the extension/contract is 25% of the salary cap. For players with 7-9 yrs, Like LeBron and Wade, the maximum first year salary is 30% of the salary cap. Over 10 year vets like Dirk and Pierce were eligible for salaries up to 35% of the salary cap.
OKC offered the most they could in starting salary, annual raises, and guaranteed years and Durant took it.
Getting the right pieces and barring any major injuries, I think OKC Thunder will be a force in the West. I like the way this team is coming together......
