Kinda slow on news lately, so I figured I would share the little I found on the blogosphere...

Update on the Spurs Cap Situation

A little while back I wrote a piece that pondered whether bringing Matt Bonner back was worth it if it meant paying the luxury tax. As fans, I guess we shouldn’t care about whether or not the Spurs pay the tax; but as a realist I can’t help but keep that in my head. What I always come back to is the knowledge that Spurs have almost left San Antonio at least twice since I became a die-hard fan, and money always played a big part in those situations.

Interesting. If the Spurs are really committed to staying under the Tax line it should get pretty interesting to see how they handle the situation with RJ, Hairston, Gee, Temple, and bringing in another FA. It looks like its going to be real close.

Tbh, the numbers he throws for a possible RJ contract are a bit unrealistic at this point IMHO.

Not exactly sure if this is true, but this kind of put me under the impression that if the Spurs were to sign another FA with the 2.4 they have remaining of the MLE than Gee's option would likely not be picked up to make sure we stay under the tax line. IMO, I would rather sign a player for the LLE (Morrison, Nachbar, Simmons) and pick up Gee's option. Obviously this doesn't really mean anything if Holt and the Spurs don't mind going over the tax line again.

I posted this already, but since everyone ignores my threads maybe these could be merged. We could take two terrible threads and turn then into one bad thread.

I wasn't trying to be rude. My sense of humor doesn't translate very well on the internet.

You think too low? I wouldn't be surprised if they get him for much less due to him striking out on the market.

Too high. If I'm the Spurs, I'm not offering more than MLE type of money. It's not our fault he walked away from $15m....

Ah yeah I would agree. I think my compadre's guess was ok in the framework of his post because it's always better to guess high when thinking about future cap consequences. I agree with you though. I think a lot of people here will be surprised at how low the starting salary will be for RJ. If I had to guess I'd guess it starts around 6/6.5

Pretty much what I'm thinking as well. 4yrs starting at $6.5 = $30.0.

Then again, the Spurs could be thinking about giving RJ a descending contract that could help offset the raises that other players are going to be getting on their contracts. Something like starting RJ at $9 mil and having his contract get cheaper by $1 mil a season. That still works out to 4yrs/$30 mil. The Spurs need to talk contract extension with George Hill next offseason and he's going to want a decent chunk of change.

If you've accepted the concept of going over the luxury tax any time over the next 4 seasons, this would be the season to do it in. The luxury tax pool this year won't be anything close to what it was last year where the tax pool had 11 teams and $111 million in it.

    DeJuan Blair 0.918
    Malik Hairston 0.854
    Alonzo Gee 0.762
    Garrett Temple 0.762

leaves 9.513m under the luxury tax to sign RJ and 2 others.

    do-able.
