The GOP National Committee is millions of dollars in debt, kinda like they left the country after 8 years...

seriously? this is the party that is supposed to win many house seats in November and they don't have a nickle to share between them?

WASHINGTON -- The Republican National Committee's treasurer says the GOP has millions in debt that wasn't disclosed and he is telling budget committee members that he was misled.

RNC Treasurer Randy Pullen amended the committee's Federal Election Commission reports to show some $3.3 million in debt for May and $3.8 million for June. The RNC, which had crowed about having zero debt, now has more than $2 million in debt, according to FEC reports filed Tuesday.

The financial reports highlight the split between RNC Chairman Michael Steele and Pullen. The latest revelations come as the party has been under fire for lavish spending.

Pullen's memo was first reported by The Washington Times.

Maybe now the GOP can fire Michael Steele (without looking like total racists.)

    "Winning the House while broke"

Big Business, esp Wall St, is/will be giving big to Repugs, to punish Dems for weak, gutted financial reform, etc.

Don't they own majority shares in Fox News stock? They should just cash some of that in right now, since I would assume Fox is doing well in this climate of panic and "it's the end times" political rhetoric. Or they could just hit up Murdoch directly for a loan.

It's not enough debt to matter... $10-20M isn't that hard to raise at a national level. It would make a far more interesting story to explain how they got in debt than that they did, IMO.

You guys keep up with your fantasies that the GOP won't have any money to spend this election cycle. The RNC is not the GOP's only bullet. Big republican donors have intentionally been giving money directly to candidates and PAC's in order to send Michael Steele the message to get his together.

    This is a non-story.

RNC Chaos Threatens GOP Chances For House Takeover
The chaos at the Republican National Committee threatens to cost Republicans the chance to take control of the House of Representatives, Republican strategists fear. During midterm elections, the national committee plays two essential roles: it serves as a bank account that can be drawn upon to shore up House races or put others into play. Second, it coordinates the party's field operations and funds joint "Victory" committees with state parties. The RNC, at the moment, is barely fulfilling the second function and has less than $10 million on hand, so it cannot help much with House races.

Charlie Cook, the political oddsmaker, rates 73 House races as compe ive. To win the House, Republicans would need to pick up 44 seats. They have the candidates to do that, but Democrats have a significant financial advantage to use to hold seats; the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has twice has much cash on as the National Republican Campaign Committee. As Cook has noted, even if Republicans win most of the tossup seats and races that lean Republican, they'd have to win about half the seats that lean Democrat right now. The degraded political environment, the sluggish or non-existent economic recovery, and the enthusiasm of Republican base voters are intangibles that, properly harnessed, could easily put Republicans over the top.

But without a solid field program to bring voters to the polls, and facing well-funded Democratic in bents, that edge could be lost on election day.

The party's well-regarded political director, Gentry Collins, has seen his budget slashed considerably, and state parties have complained about the condition of the party's Voter Vault datamart. Many state parties are outsourcing their targeting operations, which would have been unthinkable during the flush years of the Bush-Cheney administrations.

The latest scandal, involving $7m that the party's own treasurer categorized as unreported debt, will undermine any opportunity the party has to regain its financial footing before the election. The NRCC does not expect any money from the RNC, and is instead relying on the much-less efficient mechanisms created by Republican strategists and donors who can't coordinate with campaigns and the committees.

    Wishful thinking.

If employment picks up, they might have a problem.

    Pray things get worse, Republicans.
