With all of the Doom and Gloom talk from fellow Spurs fans, it seems like maybe a spark of hope is needed. Something to remind us why this team again won 50 games and fulfilled, at least in part, our blood lust for the hated in-state rivals.
Sometimes a place just seems to have that luck, doesn't it? It doesn't change, more than waxes and wanes, and it continues to rear it's beautiful, welcome and unexpected head. There are places that perpetually get "the shaft" when it comes to team sports. There are some places that just maintain their averageness, never excelling to dominance, only to mediocrity. Cleveland is one such place.
Then there are the places that, regardless of year or outside influence, consistently trip and fall into bountiful treasure. Our dearly loved San Antonio team is in one of those places. How is it that the small market San Antonio Spurs have happened upon so many legends so many times and somehow finds ways to keep doing it?
My whole theme seems to have gotten off track. All I really wanted to say is that there's hope for the now, and the future. George Hill widens our eyes at least once a game.
Did we already forget about the Beast?
Hill is entering only his third year and Blair into his second. They both have higher ceilings than what we've seen so far.
There's also a couple of new guys that show a lot of promise that may soon be hailed by pundits as "steals". We have the old guard, showing the new, high character, high talent youngsters the Spurs' way. It's lookin good from here, guys.
p.s. If you thought all of this was b.s., well at least we don't have Bogans and Mason anymore, right?
People are antsy this offseason. Negative vibes are rampant for some reason. As if they expected the Spurs to completely overhaul or pull off the coup of the summer.
I was all excited after the last offseason, but this year I'm just taking a wait and see approach. Sure, I want the Spurs to do well this year and in the future, but I just can't get that worked up about how other people choose to spend their money.

The thing is that so many teams made huge splashes this offseason and money was being thrown around like so much garbage, it's hard to keep it all in perspective. The Spurs still have a great team that will be improved on from last year's team. Two massive additions by subtraction are the dead weights of Mason and Bogans. It's almost inconceivable that any of our replacements for them, be they Hairston, Anderson, Neal or Gee, could be any worse at their respective positions.

So I can point at the glass 3/4 full all day (Splitter, Blair, Hill, Temple, Anderson, subtracting Mason and Bogans) and you will lament the 1/4?
Get over Bonner already, he's a good player. Nobody ever said he was great, but he's good. He's not our starting 4 or 5, so what's the big deal? RJ is someone that we're going to have to wait and see with. I'm still not sold on the "fact" that he's a bust for this team.

I know the WCSF isn't a le, but it's not chopped liver either. Last year's team, flawed as it may have been, was able to topple a very talented two seed before running into the buzz saw that was the Phoenix Suns. happens sometimes.
Spurs aren't front-runners like they were five years ago and probably won't be with Tim aging, so I don't understand the huge surprise when they don't end the season with a parade.

Bonner is an effective player when he has less than 10 minutes a game. He is a spot-up shooter and that should be his only job. When the Spurs were at their most effective, each player fulfilled a role and only that role. When they have lost it is because they asked players to do to much beyond their capabilities. Now, they have the ability to ask players that are younger to fulfill those roles, thus we are now in a more advantageous spot then we were in the past when we were asking aged veterans to perform those duties.
Yea, I remember when we supported the Spurs franchise through thick and thin before we had won a championship. It was fun to watch the games and enjoy the journey to have a shot at going deep into the playoffs. Now, we've been spoiled as fans to the point where it's either win the le or endure scorn and disgust at a pitiful showing.
Spurs got a little deeper but also a little older. My concern is Manu. After finally getting back into game form at the end of the year he faded in the playoffs. I would like to think it was the broken nose, but we saw the same thing in 2008.
so are Eduardo Najera, Ryan Hollins and Brian Scalabrine. Should we give them 4 mil a year too???

I wonder how long into the season we get "man I wish we had Bogans back, at least he gave some effort on defense" or the one I'm gonna love "maybe we should give Roger Mason another chance," yes, Roger ing Mason, "I think he's still a good shooter." I know this is going to happen, because a few people were calling for ing Jacque Vaughn during the season last year.

I think similar to Dallas the year before, it was our bench that seperated us from PHX. Bonner only had 1 good game in all the playoffs. Plus, PHX just had an amazing shooting rhythm that series. When they're shooting like that, hard not to lose. Splitter will help this year, and as long as Manu stays healthy, he will still be the explosive player we all know him as. Parker as well. In a contract year, he will play great, I just hope he remembers to put the team before showcasing himself to other teams if [or when] he does leave S.A. G.Hill & DeJuan will also be better. Hopefully James Anderson becomes what y V. called him. "the steal of the draft" who will "become a star".
Many of us didn't expect a le during 2007 with guys like Vaughn or Oberto on the team, but it happened. I know not having Bruce hurts us the most compared to that team, but if healthy, I don't see how Duncan, Parker and Ginobili can't contend this season if our young and new guys slightly over achieve.
Bare in mind though that the 07 Manu, Parker, and TD will now be about 4 years older from that time. That's a ton in basketball years especially for the 30+ players. Not saying that it can't happen but bringing up 07 when the big 3 were all in their prime is a very long time ago.
The supporting cast is going to not have to be just good, but of good to have a shot.
