Four days of peace, love, and rockets known as QuakeCon 2010 begins today in Dallas, and id Software head honcho John Carmack is promising to kick off the festivities with a little surprise.
Carmack got id fans salivating last night when he tweeted: "I'm showing something neat and unannounced at QuakeCon tomorrow. Deciding if I should leave it be or sneak a little more code..."
Based on previous announcements from id and recent comments made by Carmack in an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, it's likely Doom 4 will make its world premier at QuakeCon 2010.
At QuakeCon 2009, id stated it wouldn't have any news on Doom 4 until QuakeCon 2010. And fans hoping to truly have their minds blown by a completely new IP from id will have to wait a good, long time. In his interview with OPM, Carmack said his studio is concentrating on its current franchises, Wolfenstein, Quake, Doom, and Rage.
"We do already have more IPs than we can exploit," he told OPM. "I doubt we're going to do another IP. It's scary to say it, but maybe not in the next decade even, because we want to support Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake - and hopefully we can add Rage onto that - and I don't want five teams here. Three is scary enough."
When asked about Doom 4, which was officially announced as in development in 2008, Carmack told OPM production is in full swing and, "It shouldn't take as long to ship as Rage. It's already in the pipeline and we feel good about it."
Carmack is set to make the keynote address at QuakeCon this afternoon. We'll keep you posted.
