Just wondering if anyone here might be able to help me.

I have a XFX Nforce 780i motherboard on my home pc and today for some reason my PC stopped working. When I turn it on the PS comes on and all the coolers and lights on the mobo turn on, but for some reason nothing comes on my monitor. Not even the XFX logo that always does.

Does anyone know enough about motherboards to know whether this means its toast? I really hope not, otherwise I'm going to have to send for a new one and probably won't have a pc for weeks...

Sorry to hear that. If I remember correctly, are you still in Argentina? I can drive to Fry's and get a good video card for $50 :/ Thus, my comment.

Are you sure the power plugs to the card are firmly connected?

It could also be your power supply being busted... I would try the card on another machine and see if it works...

How could it be the power supply? everything turns on except the monitor gets absolutely no signal. Plus, the mb seems to get stuck at one point where it stops booting. It just continues to be on with all the fans and lights on, both HDs are on, even the cooler on the GTX280 is running. I just don't know wtf could be wrong.

Power supplies are pretty fickle things, man. It might have enough power to give your mobo juice and run the fans, but not enough to properly push the necessary wattage to run it. I'm not an expert on power by any means though, so this is a guess.

Is there any way you could swap out components from another card? Does your mobo have a VGA or DVI out on it, by chance, so that you could try bypassing your vid card? You need to start narrowing down the possibilities.

It's probably running on it's own power source.

I know, but it could be a bad vid/power cable. Probably not since he says it seems to halt booting, but still.

Yeah. He really needs to start isolating components to see what might be malfunctioning. , his VC might just need to be reseated. Mine somehow popped loose a couple of days ago and wouldn't boot.

MM, are there any computer stores near you that you could take it to, just to borrow their gear to see which component might be on the fritz? They might not even charge you for it.

Probably limited options being in Buenos Aires.

I've already taken it to a friend's store. Hopefully he can tell me what the happened. I already checked that it wasn't just a loose cable.

Hey Havoc, I didn't know VCs could be reset. How do you do that?

Reseated. As in, it might not be fully pushed into the slot holding it in the motherboard.

I pulled mine out, blew it off, and popped it back in (carefully! ) and my computer fired right back up afterward.

oh, no its definitely not that. I already took it out made sure it was clean and then put it back in making sure it was in right. It still wouldn't work.

That card draws 147W at idle and 292W at peak. That's quite a bit of juice.
If you have a aging/bad cap and the power supply can't provide enough juice the card won't start and neither will your system. A recommended PSU for a system running that card is at the very least 450W.

Now, I'm not saying that HAS to be the reason, but it can definitely be one of the things you want to check out.

Did you try that card on another box yet? That's the very first thing I would do.

I have an 750W PS. Plenty of juice to go around.

I've already sent the computer to see what it could be. I don't have another computer to check it with. My friend does though, so he'll check everything and let me know.

Just want to update. I already got my pc back and it turns out it wasn't hardware related, other than the fact my VC seems to have a problem connecting with my monitor sometimes.

Turns out the problem was that one of the files needed during the boot process vanished for some unknown reason so the pc would stop mid-boot and not load windows at all. Ofcourse, that would have been pretty evident had it not been for the fact my monitor was recieving no signal. So in other words, two problems conspired to mislead the out of me.

Anyways, I had to format the main harddrive, but before I did an intallation of windows on top of my old installation in order to retrieve all the important data. Either way, I already have it running in tip top shape.

Thanks to everyone that tried to help
