Looks like they're just flying in a straight line shooting randomly. Looks more exciting the the space combat in Star Trek: Online anyway.

Graphics look great but hopefully they just disabled the HUD or user interface since you're just shooting randomly otherwise.

Then again since its a MMO there's always lag so maybe there's little to no twitch skill involved. MMO's are all about auto attacks and setting up rotations.

I been reading quite a bit about swtor since E3. There has been a lot of complaints about the combat, ground not space, let's hope they can clean it up.

Yeah complaints from people who aren't testers. Ive been following the game ever since they announced it and I am also a member of one of the bigger clans, people on the forums are always complaining like most forums.

Talking about space combat think of it like a minigame you can play if you ever get tired of the normal MMO grind. For a minigame it looks great it's basically Star Fox.

here is an article thats not from some forum, but people in the forums seem to back it up.

At level one I had a melee attack, an instant lightning attack, and a drawn-out channeled lightning attack. The instant lightning attack did not feel instant at all. I would use it and my character would do nothing for about a second (no cast timer or animation would appear) before he'd twitch into action. Lightning would arc from his hands and fry the beast, and then he'd go back to normal. I didn't experience the same thing with the other two abilities, though I experienced it consistently with the instant lightning, leading me to believe it wasn't simply lag. The cooldowns were also strangely displayed, and seemed to have trouble detecting when I was in range.

Activating my melee attack would cause my character to swing his not-quite-lightsaber (it was a big, electrified rod!) a few times. When faced with a group of enemies – which is very often – switching between targets during the attack wouldn't carry the attacks across to my new target. These elements made the combat feel sloppy and disjointed, which is really the opposite of what awesome force-wielding badasses should feel like. Again, of course, there is more than enough time for this to be polished and turned into a beautiful, flowing system.

I guess there are different opinions, the guys at Darthhater found combat to be pretty smooth. We'll know if anything has changed though since there are Stage Demos going on right now at Gamescom.

Here is an article posted earlier today from a different IGN writer who doesn't mention his cohort's previous experience. So maybe it was improved who knows. lol

I was hoping that space combat would seem more fulfilling. It seems like its Afterburner in space with a Star Wars theme. It would be better if the player was granted full control of their starship and the ability to fly anywhere they want and engage in any way they want to. Hopefully they can fix that. I am not much into the star wars universe much, but dogfighting in space has a certain appeal to me. I have yet to really find a great space combat sim. STO was very very close, but too slow. I would rather have a 1 man fighter than a huge friggin ship anyways.

If your looking for a close to perfect space combat sim, it came out about 14 years ago.

    X-wing Vs Tie fighter.

I dont think anything has come close to touching its splendor (after the Balance of Power expansion was released).

8 player free-for-all space combat..... co-op missions..... it had it all.... Ahh, I remember the days of co-oping to try to take down star destroyers and stuff in a squadron of X-wings.

X-Wing vs Tie Fighter is still my favorite space combat sim. That game with updated graphics would own. They need to hurry up and re-release it. Supposedly Interplay is going to do it according to G4TV.
