Why is it such a big deal? Long has money. If his phone breaks, he can buy another one. If I had that money, I would have jailbroken my phone the moment the JB came out. But alas, I don't have the money, so I'm staying away because I want my phone to stay under warranty, especially since I'm going to buy the Apple Care plan to cover the phone for the entirety of the contract I have. Once the new iPhone comes out (presumably in 2 years) I'll jailbreak this one and move on to the newest phone.

You do realize that the jailbreak is completely software based, right? As in, there is no way for apple to tell if you've jailbroken it. It's completely reversible. If you have a problem, you flash the phone back to factory settings and then your warranty is good again.

My old 3G was jailbroken. Then some dude fell on me while I was sitting on a golf cart. Busted the home key. I flashed it back to factory, and sent the phone off. Apple never said a word about it and honored the warranty.

And jailbreaking the phone is tantamount to saying, "Apple's draconian methods of locking down their phones is stupid." Not exactly the message they're attempting to convey.

And what if the phone is rendered to such a condition where restoring it to factory is not an option?

You see, as much care as I take of my phone, there are two factors at play here.

    1) I work in an environment where there are heavy machines being moved all about. I unload trucks with electric pallets jacks and operate a forklift. Again, I take great care with my phones, but that doesn't mean I haven't dropped them on occasion. Now, if a pallet jack runs over it, no worries because there won't be anything left to tell if it's jailbroken or not.

But what it a pallet falls on it. The phone is sturdy enough to withstand a pallet being on top of it, but probably not sturdy enough to sustain such an impact and still be operable. And this is something that can easily happen if one isn't paying attention for even a split second.

    2) However, this is a much more likely scenario. I have two kids ages 4 and 2. I do what I can to keep my phone away from them, but my oldest is a bit of a problem solver while my youngest is at the stage where everything goes in her mouth. My son got to an iPod I had when he was about 2 and completely ruined it by sticking it in his mouth and chewing on it while I was cleaning another room.

He's past that stage, but he does try to play with the phone. The most likely scenario is that my son finds the phone, figures out how to get it (he comes up with things I didn't think he could do) and then plays with it. When he's done, he puts it down and my daughter finds it and does god knows what with it.

I could find it on the floor after stepping on it (which it should survive because it's pretty strong) or I could find it in the toilet. I'm not a true genius where I could reset the thing after it has been dropped in water.

Now, you might be thinking, "Well how long would he not be paying attention to his kids for this to happen?" There's some logical explanations. You see, I'm a single dad. So I could be cleaning my bedroom while the kids are supposed to be in their room watching TV. But alas, that doesn't always happen.

Or I could be cooking dinner and making sure I'm not burning the food. That would allow my son more than enough time to do some damage.

Or the third and most likely of all scenarios, I could just be in the bathroom taking a piss, and my son only needs a few seconds to do his dirty work, and my daughter only needs a few seconds to finish the job. In the 1-2 minutes I'm in the bathroom, a whole lot can happen.

So I don't risk it any of it, and just let the phone be. Besides, I don't need access to all those apps. I'm really not going to use them anyway. I've got a good collection of apps that I really and truly use everyday. I have 6 folders with at least 6 apps in each and a second page with 14 more apps on it. I easily have 50 apps, and I say I use about 70% of them everyday.

You see, there is a fallacy with your statement. The problem with that is, how many people who saw Justin Long on Jimmy Kimmel actually saw that his phone was jailbroken?

Furthermore, how many of them actually CARE if he did that?

I guarantee the number is far smaller than the website is hoping it to be. Thousands of people may care, but out of the millions who have bought the phone, that number is quite small and insignificant. But if it gives you another reason to try and bash the phone and Apple, then have at it I guess.

I bet it makes you feel better about yourself.

Yep! But what would I know? I'm just an Apple hater.

I see your point, but chances are they aren't going to look at it that carefully if it won't turn on. Also, water damage is not typically covered by a warranty, in fact Apple installed a water damage meter so that they can quickly ascertain if moisture has hit the internal components.

You see, there is a fallacy with your statement. The problem with that is, how many people who saw Justin Long on Jimmy Kimmel actually saw that his phone was jailbroken?

I don't. I just find it humorous/ironic that a former spokesperson for Apple is doing something that the company expressly forbids against. Not a big deal.

I guarantee the number is far smaller than the website is hoping it to be. I'm not bashing anything, and I'm definitely not alone in feeling that Apple's way of locking down their tech is a bit overboard. Even Engadget, a huge proponent of Apple, recommends jailbreaking.

he raved about his iPhone just as much as he does about his Evo, it wasn't that long ago dude.
That's unpossible! I hate Apple and everything they stand for*!

*Despite the fact that I've repeatedly stated how good of a phone the iPhone 4 is, how I recommended it to my g/f, and how awesome the iPhone 3G was for setting the curve so far ahead of other phones that it's still kind of ridiculous to think about.

I know the first thing they do when you go into a retail store is pull out the LED pen light and check the liquid indicators. RIM has also had them on their phones for years, and I believe HTC does as well. Probably par for the course. Generally a liquid sensitive strip that changes from white to pink or red when liquid touches it, and made by 3M. On the iPhone there are three - headphone jack, under the 30 pin dock connector on the bottom of the phone, and an internal one. The repair depot for Apple by and large goes by the internal one these days.

Ha. That's hilarious. What's also hilarious is why people are so afraid of jailbreaking there phone. And I bet bottom dollar they think "conspiracies" are gibberish. Apple doesn't track you. Drives me nuts. Live a little. It's just a F'ing phone.

Especially when it takes all of 5 minutes to do.
