They're going for max gaming performance. 3 monitors would just slow the 5870s down.

I'd like to get my hands on this motherboard and go all out if I had the money to burn.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128446

you could easily spec out a system costing more than $10,000 with that beast.

Sure, 4 gigs of VRAM is overkill now, but in 2 years when games have really taken Dx11 to it's limits, you'll need it.

I agree, the eyefinity is awesome, but if you want max frame rates (i.e., a record breaking system), one screen is the way to go.

You're right though, multiple screens would make this rig even more awesome.

Nah. Games really haven't moved much past the requirements of 2007's Crysis. Sure, it was only DX10, but with 4 Gigs of VRAM, you're going to be able to run any game that comes out on at least med-high for the next 3 years. That rig is so overkill right now it's crazy.

This rig is more expensive than the 12-core Mac Pro but I hate Macs and Apple in general.

Can you fit in two 6-cores in that system? With 32 GB RAM? And 16 GB disk space?

It's also FAR more powerful for just 15% more than the Mac Pro. There isn't even a comparison between these systems. The newegg rig would smash the Mac on everything short of programs designed only for 8x+ core processing.

People still spend $6K on computers in this day and age?
Meh, most don't. This is more like a what-if hypothetical where money is no object. Right now the magic price point for the best performance is right around $800 for an entire computer, but if you don't need anything massively overpowered, you can actually build a very solid gaming PC for ~$350 right now. Pretty incredible. This is more like the Lamborghini of computers... it's not meant to be in a reasonable price range.

    Not a problem.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.461648

    CPU and Case for $90

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817152028

    Decent power supply. $30

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827135204

$22 for the DVD burner. Blu Ray isn't really necessary and can be added later if it is.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152244

    $42 for the HDD.

    Total so far $184

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820141366

$76 for the RAM. Could probably find it cheaper elsewhere.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121354

$50 for the GPU. The 9800 is an older card that would be faster for most games, but of course there's no DX10 with it.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813186189

    $45 for the mobo.

Guess what? $355 exactly. For another $30 you could have a very serious GPU that will be even better for gaming, and for $450 total you could have an extremely solid rig.

And this is from a single website, without deal hunting, or checking out eBay for steals on RAM or a good vid card. To say nothing of what you can find on craigslist for parts and then upgrading.

It's fairly simple. The only slightly complicated thing is attaching the CPU to the motherboard. Even then, that's more tedious than complex.

Get the box, bolt the mobo to the box, put the power supply + hard drives in their respective bays, attach the CPU+heatsink to the mobo, slot the ram in, then the video card, put the DVD burner in it's bay, connect the cables, and off you go.

    very true
shouldn't fret unless you're getting an intel cpu heatsink/fan
it's a to install the mofo

like he said most everything is more tedious than complex, especially installing the software/updates
