AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas freshman linebacker Tevin Jackson is ineligible to play and can't enroll in school because he has not yet been cleared by the NCAA.

The university said in a statement Thursday that an issue with Jackson's high school transcript has kept him from being ruled eligible.

University officials "will continue to pursue getting the issue resolved in order for Jackson to enroll." But if the situation isn't resolved quickly, he'll be unable to enroll this semester and won't be eligible to play for the Longhorns.

The 6-foot-2, 230 Jackson, from Garland, was an All-State at linebacker in 2009.

Not a big deal if things get straightened out like Tevin Jackson says they will. He needs more time to rehab his wrist injury and he was likely to be redshirted anyway. Not sure I understand the bizarre timing of this on the NCAA's part, though. You let the kid go through the entire summer of workouts and declare him ineligible two days before the first game of the year?!? Usually a problem like that surfaces directly after a letter of intent is signed in February. He'll most likely re-enroll in January of 2011.

key will be to make sure he can get enrolled by spring. academic issues have a tendency to snowball if not remedied immediately.
