Gearbox Software Unveils Duke Nukem Forever

It's taken 13 years, tens of millions of dollars, and a couple lawsuits, but the videogame that created the Vaporware Award is finally, officially on its way. Publisher 2K Games and developer Gearbox Software announced this afternoon at the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle that the Chinese Democracy of videogames, Duke Nukem Forever, is complete and will ship early next year.

We've been following the rumor the game would make its debut at PAX Prime for a month, but given Duke Forever's joke-worthy development cycle, we vowed not to believe it until we saw it. Well, today we saw it. Gearbox studio head Randy Pitchford debuted the Duke Nukem Forever trailer and PAX attendees were given hands-on time with the game. Seriously.



"I know it's hard to believe, but it's totally real. It's really happening," Pitchford said before explaining how Gearbox got involved with the project: "I broke into the industry at 3D Realms, and I witnessed firsthand how the guys there put their hearts and minds into it. When Duke got into trouble, we wanted to help. We couldn't let the Duke die. We wanted to deliver the game that was supposed to be."

Pitchford said Gearbox, of Borderlands fame, got involved with finishing Forever in late 2009. The game is now in the "polishing stages" and is set to ship as a multiplatform le in early 2011.

We'll have the trailer up as soon as it becomes available. All hail the king, baby.

I think your wrong about people caring about the franchise, but your en led to your opinion.

Honestly.... Did you ever even play any of the Duke Nukem games? Probably the best online FPS gaming to ever be had until Quake came along, and even then Duke was more interesting.

Now, for the new game, I will hold my reservations..... but I extremely doubt its going to suck.

I'll be surprised if this turns out any good. Maybe if it was released a decade ago like it should've been. What we'll get is a 10-year-old FPS with modern graphics.

I'm with Phyzik, I'd buy it on nostalgia alone. But everything I've seen looks, at least, like it will be entertaining. The interactivity/one liners alone may be worth it.

Saw this as a TV commercial not even 2 hours ago while watching "Archer".

The cool thing was that my friend, who I recently reaqainted with not even a year ago after almost 10 years of silence, was there and he saw it too... We used to play Duke Nukem 3D for ing HOURS!

I reminded him of how often I owned his ass with the pipe bomb.

Dont remember the name of the level, but it was that one where there was an elevator and at the top was a security station with camera's in it..... I would always get him by putting a pipe bomb on the elevator and sending it down, then watch the camera for him to board it then detonate.... Or I would lay the pipe bomb at the top of the elevator and hide on the ground somewhere and watch him ride it up to the top before detonating it... Or some variation of that.

He would get soo pissed....
