can you give us a dx link?
usually not worth an own thread, but considering the acute shortage of real news.......
(and btw. it is an interesting question indeed)

the point is, there could be a pretty realistic scenario with ASVEL and the Spurs trying to sign Mickael Gelabale, because he offers much of what the Spurs would need for the (back up) SF spot. (good size and lengths, defense, 3pt shooting).I'm not saying there's a conflict of interests there; however, one day, in one instance, there may one day be one. Suppose that one day....an ASVEL player becomes a significant free agency candidate. If the team with the owning player bids for the FA, is that not a problem?
outside the last game vs. Turkey he played a pretty good championship and especially his 3pt shooting was outstanding (56%).
I see some logic behind this scenario. Gelabale has played a good season in France last year so I doubt he didn't receive any interesting offers from good euro-league clubs (no ASVEL is not really). There has to be some more reason beside ASVEL being decent for him to go there.
I could not understand the last sentence, until i read the first two of the original quote:And I remember Bruno mentioning Gelabale as a FA-fit for the Spurs one or two summers ago...Tony Parker has a stake in ASVEL Villerbanne. Active players owning parts of other teams. I'm not saying there's a conflict of interests there; however, one day, in one instance, there may one day be one. Suppose that one day....an ASVEL player becomes a significant free agency candidate. If the team with the owning player bids for the FA, is that not a problem?
Tampering rules aren't as strict as people think. There are still some interactions between NBA and European teams.
For example, Spurs belong to a scouting structure whose members are Cavs, Raptors, Benetton Treviso, l'ASVEL and maybe some other teams. The goal of this scouting structure is to share cost. It's not a coincidence that Gery Neal, who spend two years in Treviso, is now a Spur.
And I don't think Gelabale will leave l'ASVEL now while their season starts in two weeks. He will try to go back in NBA next summer.
However, in the future, there will likely have some interactions between l'ASVEL and Spurs. It should be through draft prospects because l'ASVEL is spending a lot of money to develop players. As long as Parker is a minority owner of the team, I don't see the NBA creating troubles but when/if Parker become the main owner, it could be more complicated.
What makes more sense is that they are both French and have NBA experience. I'd see a friendship component before an interest by the Spurs.
Gelabale was considered a Bruce Bowen defensive type IIRC when he first came over and he fell horribly on his face with Seattle.
Has he really improved that much since blowing out his knees?
Gelabale's career in Seattle wasn't very lucky from the beginning. playing for a bad team with an inferior coach, a decent start, enough minutes (due to an injury of Lewis) and then in and out of the rotation, that was changed from game to game. next season he struggled to find a role playing behind Durant and Wally, then the injury.
this doesn't mean he would have been successful in another situation, he was (and still is) a player with a limited skill set. it just tries to explain, that his NBA career (which was more or less a rookie season plus half a season as an end of the bench player) might not yet tell the whole story about his NBA potential.
we are not talking about a potential starter or 1-7th rotation player anyhow. we are talking about a role player who might be able to take a reduced role as a back up. a 8th-10th, 15 MPG player at the SF spot, which is exactly the role the Spurs could offer.
Last I heard about this guy was he was working out in Dallas about a year ago - preparing to try and catch on with an NBA team. Reportedly, the Mavs and Spurs had strong interest then. This was all prior to the start of last season. Anybody know why he never caught on with an NBA team?
I assume no team wanted to give him guaranteed money back then. don't know what kind of contract Cholet gave him, but we must not forget that this was the team where he started his career. he might just have wanted to work again with Erman Kunter, who once developed him into a player good enough to eventually be hired by Real Madrid.
