The only thing that will cause the Dems to lose big is lack of voter participation - a real risk in a midterm election year. It's all about the "enthusiasm gap."
Thus, getting liberals scared about the possibility of a drubbing actually benefits them.
I think the pundits are going to be surprised at the results of election day. A lot of races that Republicans were winning months ago are now very close. Their insistence on putting up radical right wing nutbags ( o, Sharron Angle!) is likely to cost them a few elections, such as Angle v. Reid. Voters don't like Reid much, but they really don't like Angle.
