want RJ to do well here in SA?
I can understand some negative criticism after the season he had last year. I just think that it was blown completely out of proportion.
I think of it like this.
Can RJ actually work in this system? Sure he can.
Can RJ justify his recent contract? Sure he can.
Will he? Season hasn't started yet.
Therefore, I think it is unfair to label the man as a failure. I think RJ can turn it around. As a Spurs fan, I am obligated to give the man my full support and only criticize when it is constructive.
RJ had a terrible season. Get over it. A new season is around the corner and you should all be wishing him luck.

I was off of ST for most of the summer, and its been weird coming back to see some of the posters that have been staples of this site since I've been here turn into unreasonable trolls whenever RJ comes up. Disappointing, but its just a result of staying on this site regularly during the offseason.
Lots of repe ive threads, stupid posts, rehashing negative aspects of the Spurs' season/offseason. Not allowing oneself to have a break from the frustration of watching Jefferson's underwhelming performance last season will have left any Spurs fan bitter. I'm just glad I stepped away, and am now ready to start anew with my favorite team.
Unless you hate RJ or want him to do bad to prove Pop and RC idiots or something like that, there is no reason in not to wish Jefferson the best season possible.
I just hope people won't be expecting 17 PPG and 7 boards or something like that. It's very possible that RJ's PPG will go down compared to last year, depending on how much TP will be back to being one of the best offensive point guards in the league and depending on how much playing time/how many touches Tiago will get.
If RJ is to improve, I think it will show in him being more effective offensively and more focused defensively on a consistent basis (and not only in games where he's in a groove offensively)
Why would a Spurs fan want him to fail? All RJ has to do is contribute to a winning team and I'll never look at his numbers. His contribution last year was even less than his career-low numbers might indicate, so it's a legitimate concern, and having him locked up for years is dangerous. The Spurs threw good money after bad to extend him. I hope it pays off, but I'm sure I'm not alone in being skeptical.

In the past, Spurs always let go or even traded players who didn't fit, weren't good enough or who choked. For example, Spurs let Turkoglu go, who, even if he was a talented player, choked in playoff. Another example is Rasho who was a bad fit because he was too slow to play alongside Duncan.
This summer, Spurs have spend $50M for RJ and Bonner. That's $50M for "The Ultimate Choker" and a player who badly failed to fit with the team.
It's unreal how Spurs have made a 180° turn lately and have renounce at all the values that have made their success.
I don't know a Spur fan that doesn't wish him to do well.
People might be skeptic that he can turn it around (ie: you make it a fact that he can fit in this system, but I'm not sold on it), but ultimately you want the best Spurs team possible, so that would include RJ fitting into the system.
Last, but not least, what fans want normally has little, if any, influence with the outcome. RJ is either going to figure out how to fit or he won't. And it will have nothing to do with fans' wishes.
Nearly all Spurs fans want to see RJ and the Spurs succeed.
There are a small number of message board posters who would prefer to see failure so that they can point to their predictive brilliance. This type of poster exists on every sports message board. While they make a lot of noise on boards, in reality they represent an infinitesimal portion of the fan base.
Let`s give RJ the benefit of the doubt
No one is being unfair to RJ. There were very high expectations last season which he did not meet. I think it's fair to call his lack of contribution a failure to this point. For the most part, I think everyone is willing to blame it on the difficulty in trying to adjust his game to the Spurs system. But now with one season under his belt, he needs to make some kind of positive impact this year. Especially with the money he is getting. I don't understand all you that are so incensed and feel the need to defend him.

RJ has bad season
Spurs fans frustrated
RJ comes out of closet
Spurs fans bemused
RJ resigns for lots of money

Now it's RJ's turn to write the next chapter.
Here's the problem w/ Jefferson.
If Jefferson had some post up skills he'd have a niche in the starting lineup; but he doesn't. If Jefferson could shoot 3's he'd have a niche in the starting lineup, but he's below average at that. If Jefferson could play lock down defense, he'd have a niche in the starting lineup but he's only average at that.
The few things Jefferson did well last year are making cuts to the basket and finishing fast breaks. Since Parker finds Jefferson on 1 out of 100 cuts to the basket, bout the only thing he's useful in the starting lineup is finishing fast breaks, which 90% of the time Parker takes it all the way to the rim himself anyway. Jefferson just doesn't have much of a place or role w/ Parker in the starting lineup, that is why I believe he will end up coming off the bench once again w/ Ginobili and the 2nd unit.
He did manage to have some success last year once he was paired w/ Ginobili and Hill. Manu is a master at finding cutters and fast break trailers/runners. And Jefferson played much better once his confidence was stoked w/ a few Ginobili assists.
Can RJ actually work in this system? Crystal Ball is cloudy, seems unlikely...
Can RJ justify his recent contract? Anything's possible...
Will he? I sure hope so...
As much as we've all bashed RJ over the summer, we'll be applauding him the first time he hits a big three or throws it down on somebody. And then we'll be cursing him again soon thereafter.

This is my thoughts for the most part.
I wanted Bonner gone. He isn't so as confused as I am, the only thing I know is to give Bonner a knife so he can cut that damn noose from his neck come playoff time.
RJ I feel is deserving of another shot. I don't think he deserved as fat of a contract after judging his performance from last year, but who knows. Maybe he will get it together this season and prove he can fit and justify the contract.
Season please start already!!!
