got a new(used-1 yr old pc).

    it runs on vista

i plug in the cable to the pc (direct from my twc modem) and it says my LAN is unrecognized and connection is local only.

all drivers are up to date.

why the is vista not recognizing a simple cable connection but XP on my other pc works fine....

I haven't had any problems with Vista, but I suppose I'm one of the lucky ones.

OP: Did you update the firmware for the modem? And you're connecting directly to the modem correct?

u fkn idiot i show you

    goto start, command prompt

    type in ipconfig,

copy down the numbers for ethernet adapter IP, it should be above or just below wireless adapter IP:

then head into ur cable modems settings and manually set a ip for the computer by putting in the computers IP into the modem to recognize it...assign ip...

then after that head into command prompt again and try ping ur cable modem

I am also one of the apparent few who had zero problems with Vista, so my first response should be quite telling.

Even if you had a fine time using Vista, Win7 is just so much more efficient than its predecessors (including XP). I highly recommend it as an OS.

You'll probably hate it; at least at first. Almost no GNU/Linux distribution comes with easy to setup audio and video. Only free software codecs will be included, which means stuff like ogg-vorbis, flac, and the like, but no mp3, no wma, no mpg, no wmv, no m4a, no mov, no mp4, no divx, no mpeg2, no css, etc. They can be setup, but it requires you adding repositories that aren't turned on by default, and a lot of jumping through annoying hoops. It's great once you get it going and learn how to automate in the bash s though (the Advanced Bash Scripting Guide is a must-read if you're going to use GNU/Linux in a way that will make it more productive to use than Windows).

I believe it can if you create a boot disk from an XP computer, format, then install.

Or you could get a better OS like win7.

does it have service pack 2?

    if it does not
download it on thumb drive and then install it on computer

does it have anything you want on it?

you can do a system recover

alot of times you can hit ctrl or fn and f10 at boot up and you get that option

hp it it f11 on bootup

    1) Did you power-cycle the cable modem?

Some cable modems cache MAC addresses and you need to power-cycle them when connecting a new device.

    2) Do you have internet service with TWC? Are the lights on the modem reporting that you have internet service?

Cable modems generally assign a local network address temporarily while access to the internet is not available, such as when the service is not enabled or the cable connection is not good.

Another option is call TW and have them send you a tech, so you don't have to fight with it.
