Michael Jordan and 2K Sports talk 'NBA 2K11'
    By Mike Snider

Michael Jordan has a history with video games: he first appeared in Electronic Arts' Jordan vs. Bird (1988) and famously was not found in NBA Jam. Now Jordan's NBA history is a game within a game, the new NBA 2K11, released earlier this week for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and other platforms.

The 2K Sports team had been hoping to get Jordan's participation for a few years. "They came to us about my participation," Jordan said in a rare interview Thursday with Game Hunters. "I haven't done a game like this in such a long time and they proposed certain ideas and concepts and what they thought they could implement into the game. Obviously, my kids are so wrapped up into this stuff. I went to them as consultants and they said it would be cool. That led to me actually getting involved."

In our short phone conversation, His Airness talked about the Jordan Challenges in the game, how the NBA has changed and how he would perform had he been able to switch decades. Later, we also talked with 2K Sports about Jordan's role.

For players who may not have witnessed the NBA's Jordan era, he says, "this is an introduction to me and I live vicariously through my kids. Have I played it? Yeah, I messed around with it. Am I good at it? No. My fingers are way too big to try to play one of these things. I am fascinated by the response I have gotten from everyone who has played the game and seen the innovation and how it's been improved. That's very positive."

How deeply involved were you in the development of the game?

That's one good thing about the whole project. They had a concept of how they wanted to utilize me in certain games and certain highlights. And all of them were great highlights, obviously. So it didn't take much for me to say, let me see how that plays into the whole scenario and once they showed it to me I thought that it was cool.

Which one of the Jordan Challenges will players find hardest?

To me the most difficult of all of them was the flu game. playing sick. That is so hard to do. It has to be a total mental challenge, as well as the physical challenge. If I had to rank them that would be (Number) One. Which is the easiest? None of them are easy. I guess the 63-point game against Boston would be the least of the other ones, because actually I didn't win that game.

I like the fact that once players beat the challenges they can put you on a current NBA team.

I thought that was the coolest part (that) if you get to a certain level now I can play on different teams, which in reality I never got to that, other than the Wizards and I'm not talking about that. When I saw the ads with Kobe, I thought that was really unique. What it really does is it educates these kids who probably never saw me play and give me a little bit more of a focus in this era. …That wasn't part of the initial thought process but it has kind of evolved to that.

How has the game changed from your playing days?

It's less physical and the rules have changed, obviously. Based on these rules, if I had to play with my style of play, I'm pretty sure I would have fouled out or I would have been at the free throw line pretty often and I could have scored 100 points.

Of course, there's always the comparison of you and Kobe Bryant. Where does Kobe stand in the status of NBA players through history?

It's so hard to say. I think he is always going to be within the conversations of some of the greatest players who've played by the time he is finished. Where does he rank among those, if you are talking about positions? If you are talking about guards, I would say he has got to be in the Top 10.

The rest of the interview is about the game, hit the link.

Psh, what does Jordan know? People always talk about their superiors. Wait till Jordan and the world (except laker fans) realize Kobe has already surpassed him

Of course he would have scored 100, with all the trips to the FT line players are getting these days.

Jordan won six les and six Finals MVPs as the Alpha Dog, with no big even close to being dominant. His bigs were pathetic offensively. Defenses could key on MJ 100%, and they did. Yet he still beat them every time.

Bryant, on the other hand, shouldn't be part of any comparison discussion, because he has absolutely coattialed two offensively dominant bigs, Shaquille and Gasol. Bryant went 6-24 in Game 7 of the 2009 Finals, nearly shooting the Lakers out of the game, yet was handed the Finals MVP trophy as if Gasol didn't exist. The Bryant hero worship is an absolute joke.

The reality is that because Bryant merely tries to be as flashy as Jordan, he's handed things he doesn't deserve because the League has always wanted a Jordan successor, or "Second Coming" guy. At least LeBron plays the way he plays, and doesn't try to go Frank Caliendo on a guy like Jordan.

He would average more than 35-40.

MJ already averaged 37 PPG IN A SEASON in 86-87.

The very next season, he averaged 35 PPG in a season.

He would easily average 40-50 PPG in a series in today's NBA.

Defensive players leave the key WIDE OPEN due to defensive 3 second rule now. This is why you see so many LeBron and Kobe and Wade dunks and layups at the rim now.

Maybe he WOULD get a 100 ... it's possible. MJ is the GOAT. But, he does have to concede when he FIRST started balling (in the mid 80's) he had a SERIOUS advantage ATHLETICALLY on EVERY guard and on many SF's as well. The league was not full of athletes of Jordan's ilk, he was way ahead of his time. IF Mj played right now, he would STILL be the best player because he is such a great fundamental payer AND a great athlete. But he is not a better natural athlete than Lebron who is also a great player too. So I dont buy all the hype that he would average 50 or score 100. I'm not saying it's impossible for MJ ...but I doubt it. Just watch his old games. He was playing Ps3 when everyone else was Genesis. just look at the Utah/Bulls finals there were times during the series where he was being guarded by Hornacek! Now he would not be the best athlete every night and would be guarded by much better athletes at the 2g position. So even though he would get a lot of Ft's he would have better compe ion too ...

Jordan could have scored 120 points. Players these days suck. People in the 90's were like 10 times better then the players 10 years later....therefore Jordan would have gotten 120 points, 13 assists and probably 20 rebounds. No doubt about it.

I think there has been a number of players that could have scored 100 points if they really wanted to. Only one has accomplished it though. No sense in talking about what MJ could have done... he didn't do it, period, point, blank. MJ has a great legacy, in fact he has the third greatest legacy behind Bill and Kareem. MJ said he wouldn't have let Kobe drop 81 on him, yet we have video of Kobe dropping 42 on MJ in one half. Kobe is already in top 3 for guards in this order, (Magic, MJ, Kobe). Kobe is already 5th legacy wise behind Bill, Kareem, MJ, Magic, Kobe. If Kobe never wins a another le, he's still on pace to end up 3rd on the all-time scoring list.

When you clowns try to reduce Kobe by mentioning the big's that he had to carry to les, you conveniently forget to mention the great big's that Magic and Bird played with. In essence, you're only proving how great Kobe has become by assuming that he needed no help to win les. I know this stings the asses of some of you. In your foolish little minds, you think Duncan can reproduce 2003 all over again, then you would have a case for Duncan having a greater legacy than Kobe, but Duncan is finished. Shaq is running around in Boston thinking the same ing thing. He's lost all shame, and willing to further tarnish his already tarnished legacy just to tie Kobe for rings. This is comedy for me and the boys to see you all pressing so bad while we just keep getting fitted for rings...

    Zone Defense.....that is all.

MJ can continue his career as a stellar NBA executive. Maybe he'll quit for 2 years and come back again.

Real Talk: NBA 2K11 is awesome and is better than last years Kobe 2K10 by leaps.
