Buck Harvey: Manu as a coach? Not that far away
    Buck Harvey

...The more assertive Ginobili has become, and the more Gregg Popovich has turned to him, the more Ginobili has emerged as the strongest leader the Spurs have had since Avery Johnson was yapping in South Texas.

He would be a badass replacement as Pop retires with the rest of our core.

i think last year, one of the problems with the team was that no one was the leader on the court. Bruce Bowen was the guy who always gathered everyone when the Spurs were in a slump and the other team was making its run, and when he left it left that void. this year, i'm definitely seeing that Manu has taken on the role of floor leader, which is really as important to any team as anything.

He’s been the best player on the best team in the league thus far this season.

Part of that is about Ginobili, too. He went to Popovich in the summer, telling him he wanted the team to get out to a quick start.

Easily a MVP candidate.. A slam dunk considering the contract extension he signed.

I remember reading a Kevin Pelton piece in the Basketball Prospectus that Manu Ginobili will be a far more worthier option as a free agent than Joe Johnson...this was before Ginobili being Manu last season after his tentative start and stretch into the season. Pelton was proved to be right as this season is among Manu's best.

Kudos to RCB and Pop for getting the extension thing done at the right time and for a good price, far less than the market value that Ginobili should have commanded. Although it is another matter if there was another team that Manu himself would value and cohere with as much as the Spurs.

Considering that Manu comes from a basketball family, I expect that he will not give up on the chance to become a big time coach someday.

It would be nice, especially if he stays with the Spurs. But he's said before that he doesn't have the patience for it...or something like that.

I don't think Manu will be a head coach. Maybe an assistant, but no more than that. Family and living in Argentina is maybe a priority for him..

He has also repeatedly said that it takes too much time to be a coach that he'd rather spend with his family.

Also, he has also stated that he sees himself more in a GM role.

    From Pop's mailbag:

    Hector Uribe III
    Location: SA
Question: With a list of former Spurs players (Avery Johnson, George Karl, Monty Williams, Mike D'Antoni, Doc Rivers, and Vinny Del Negro) all currently coaching in the NBA, which current Spurs player could you possibly see one day becoming a head coach in the future?

GP: We have a couple of people who have the knowledge of the game to do it. People like Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan but they are smart enough not to do it.

Manu would make a awesome coach I think. However I have no idea how he would resist himself from jumping on the court to play even in a suit and all.

Still, how could he begin to teach the game as he sees it, since he’s the only one who sees it that way?
Funny. I'm trying to imagine a whole team of Manus playing in a small market. David Stern would be apoplectic.

Watching Manu as coach would be almost as entertaining as watching him play basketball.

Look at the mess on that board when he's done.
