The NBA is considering allowing advertising on uniforms, according to a report by Bloomberg News.
The NBA bans advertising on uniforms, and doesn't even allow the manufacturer of the uniforms to include a visible logo like the NFL, Major League Baseball and NHL do. According to the report, the NBA is exploring advertising opportunities.
"I don't doubt it will eventually happen, but at a price that recognizes that value," NBA commissioner David Stern said in the report.
Stern also said the NBA teams lost money in the past season, but didn't offer any specifics.
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said he supported the idea.
"If it were up to me, they would already be there," Cuban told Bloomerg. The Mavericks had the second-highest payroll in the NBA at $87 million, behind only the New York Knicks.
New Jersey Nets chief executive Brett Yormark said he would even consider selling the team's name.
"Wherever the Nets went, the company would go," he told Bloomberg.
Such advertising is common in NASCAR, where a primary sponsorship can go for $20 million.

Hi.
Do it, and I will be gone.
Sincerely,
Intelligent American NBA fan.
So you wouldn't mind the Spurs eventually being named The Valero San Antonio Spurs? This is nothing new really. Nike has made billions of the NBA off shoes alone.
I know it (corporate advertising) will eventually happen, but I hate that crap. I even hate Bowl Games with the big corporate sponsorships.
seriously, i will peace the out of this if it ever happens. i already pay 40 bucks for seats.
try it stern. try it.
Absolutely not but thats the common trend these days with the Nestle Crunch Time Player of the Game and the Got Milk? Rookie of the Year hype.
Are you against the ads on uniforms all together? Or just the idea of selling out the team name?
individual games like Bowl games being d out is ok. Even stadiums. But teams? The Spurs brought to you by Taco Cabana. Seriously. Try it and most of us are ing out of here, corporate america
I'm against it because I am far from convinced that the league is in need of money. If they are reallly strapped for cash, then they have been ing up. Period. Because, last I checked, I drop about 100 bucks each Spurs game I go to.
Here's a little more ...
Name your team
CLOSE YOUR EYES a sec and imagine these new teams in the NBA: The New York Nike Knicks. The Chicago Coca-Cola Bulls. Or, the Philadelphia Cream Cheese 76ers?
Don't laugh. As if there's not enough logo/brand marketing on sneakers and elsewhere, NBA execs reportedly are considering allowing advertiser logos on player uniforms - if the price is right. (There's a surprise, eh?)
Dallas owner Mark Cuban (another surprise) said in an e-mail to the Associated Press that "anything that creates new revenue sources is good for both the teams and the players."
The NBA, unlike some leagues, has kept its jerseys clean of logos to date, including the logo of Reebok, the official uniform supplier of the NBA.
Commissioner David Stern told Bloomberg News that he and others could see a day when that changes, but said that the league is not presently soliciting offers.
"At some point in the future, the NBA owners will have a decision to make," Stern said. "In events that are broadcast around the world to 200 countries, there may come a time, in recognition of the exposure that the uniforms get, that there's a value proposition that would cause us to consider changing our policies."
It will be interesting to see where the NBA draws the line. I mean, even Victoria's Secret could make Stern an offer he can't refuse.
I'm against selling out the team name, but I wouldn't mind having say a sports logo like nike or adidas on the shirt and pants. It doesn't really change anything, and in most other countries its done fairly often. Ofcourse, I hope they don't go overboard and just have players jumping around like formula one cars with 101 advertisements on their uniforms.
...gives me creeps....So you wouldn't mind the Spurs eventually being named The Valero San Antonio Spurs?
NO. Pls.....
HAHA, I reiterate: I am a HUGE NBA fan. Try this, and I am out of here and never coming back. Not like I was gone after the baseball strike. Gone for ing good. You hear me you ing moneygrubbing s? GONE.
Maybe instead of players getting offensive and stupid tatoos, they should tatoos of nike addidas etc on there arms n legs or neck.....or like in boxin how they have advertisements on there backs or like in european soccer how the players have white singlets underneath there jerseys with advertisements...
i think fans should get endorsements too. I will be Spurs Fan In Seat 32-11-24 brought to you by Blow Me.
Translation:
I really can't blame them. As long as they keep it looking clean, I couldn't care less if there was a swoosh or some golden arches on the uniforms.
NASCAR/Indy Car Racing had ads on their uniforms for years and you don't hear them complain. Soccer teams have sponsors on their uniforms also.
I think it would be silly seeing teams with different sponsors on their jerseys. It will drive some fans away, but it will also bring in some new ones.
Welcome to Corporate America...![]()
It's gonna happen whether you want it to or not. The first round was college bowls, then the stadiums, now the uniforms. 'Minutemaid Field' is my favorite gy stadium name....
Of course they tore down 'Veterans Stadium' and 'RFK'.
I'm telling you, eventually it will be the San Antonio HEB's against the Detroit Fords.....
By the time your grandkids are your age it will be common and not a second thought about it.
You know what's after that...airports, then cities. Instead of flying into Ohara or LaGuardia you'll be flying into Walmart International in the city of Applebees.
Then it will be the Exxon Sprint -vs- the Microsoft Big and Tall in the State Farm Super Bowl.
I wouldn't mind a swoosh or as TimVP said Golden Arches, but the picture of a basketball player d out like a NASCAR driver is in his jumpsuit isn't one I really care for.
I don't know how these guys loose money, other than overpaying the out of their players, many of whom are already making a load of money from other companies.
I mean seriously, watch a game and first you have the channel itself that paid the NBA for the rights to broadcast the game, then the stadium name, for example SBC Center, then tickets to the game, then merchandise like hats, t-shirts, etc, then you have advertisements at the stadium on scoreboards and what not.
That's just a small part of it all, the NBA is d out as bad as Star Wars....
Would you tattoo my on your face for a couple grand?
OK, that was stupid and uncalled for. BUT im drunk, and I think everyone should stop accepting being treated like a ing
Well, somebody has to pay those salaries. Look for a lockout. The players may as well have SAS negotiating for them. They're 'this' close from being locked out.
Do you believe the owners aren't making money?Well, somebody has to pay those salaries.
And the league is only close to lock-out only because of greedy agents. Everything was already verbally agreed to by both sides until the agents got in the ear of the players association regarding the length of contracts.
I bet I could find someone who would.
Money makes the world go round.
