-2.5 away is pretty decent vs magic. Are you expecting a blowout like heat/phx -6.5

I agree. Spurs have to travel half-way around the world and play two tough teams on consecutive nights.

Betting lines have nothing to do with who will or will not win a given game. They are designed for one thing, and one thing only: to make the money come down even on both teams. If a bunch of s who watch ESPN run out and bet on the Magic, they will give the Spurs more points to even the betting money.

I think your wrong. They set the numbers to make sure that it will be as tough a call as possible. Obviously if everyone is picking the magic to go over, then theirs probably something wrong with the initial prediction. Eventually it evens out to a tough call. Furthermore, The magic being favor by 1.5 - 2.5 points seem about right to me. Would anyone really bet their house on the spurs winning this game?

Actually, no, I'm not. If the money is even, the losers essentially pay the winners, and the casino or book takes their percentage cut. Favoring one side or another could lead to a disasterous payout for them. That would be the casino essentially making a bet, something they never do because they could lose.

As for the bolded area, that's why lines change and fluctuate. Money goes down on one side, so they change the odds.

Also, why wouldn't we be favored? We're ing kicking ass, and they just re-booted their team.

Nah, it's because they are the Spurs. If the Spurs win 69 games and an championship they'd be consider the weakest NBA Champs to win 69 games instead of just being a great team. It's a Spurs thing. Get used to it. I am .

1,160 miles isn't even halfway across the U.S. Its significantly less than two hours by plane.

Agree with you, the line is made with the highest probability of getting equal money bet on each team. It reflects how the public will bet and not so much on what is most likely to occur with the teams involved.

An equal amount of money put on each team guarantees the books win the % difference the losers pay out as compared to what the winners get.

Thats what im saying. The prediction of the game has to be accurate for this to happen or else people will start putting money on one team. It evens out to a more a more accurate prediction of the outcome on the game.

You're right about how betting changes the line, but the opening line reflects the Vegas experts' opinion of how the game will go. Therefore, they think the Spurs are a slight underdog.

No a 747 is a fairly high cruise speed commercial jet and they are looking at around 560 mph cruising. When you add in flight patterns, ascent and decent times, taxi, and what not you are looking at a 3 hour flight even on a charter out of a municipal airport. I am not certain what the spurs are using as a charter this year but I'd assume something more economical and slower speed than a 747, a 727 or MD 80 customized for charters is more likely and will seat around 50 in a rather classy cabin with meal service and carry the teams cargo easily , you are looking at an economical criuse speed of around 490 and a 3 hour and 20 minute flight.

As for the rest of the line, these two teams properly rested would be very compe ive with each other and would probably give which ever team had home court a 2 point or so margin based on rosters. The magic's current loosing streak, and addition of the new people fresh is why the spurs on a back to back away are only down 3.5 even with them being as hot as they are.

Well, I was actually flying from SA to Orlando a year ago, and I was using the estimated time it took me to arrive which included Ascent and decent times. I could not tell you the type of plane other than it was Southwest airlines. In comparison, it took me 3hrs and 30 minutes to fly from Buffalo to San Fransisco. I have no clue what the Spurs are flying in but in no way shape or form should be too taxing. Anyhow, Jet lag is the major concern here. The spurs are most likely bused to and from the hotel.

im sorry but Stu jackson/stern and the schedule making crew always seems to have it in for us every season compared to the other elite teams. We always get these rotten schedules (none worse than 06-07 and 07-08) where we have all these one-game home stands and one-game road trips to the east or west coast and back. honestly that's ed and the Lakers always seem to get the easiest schedule in the NBA by far every year and that is because of their intimate relationship with the nba administrators and commissioner(s). Disgusting.
I thought the schedule makers gave us a pretty darn easy schedule to start the season. Why is it always how the Spurs are getting screwed? The refs, Stern, the league office, analysts, and columnists all hate us. Everybody's out to get us.... Give me a break.
