C4 is a pretty bad move. Why you gotta talk like that?

Assuming Pop is a defensive person, I'm sure he'll open c3 or d3..

opening c4 probably means he sucks dismally at the game. the ONLY accepted logical moves are 1. d4 and 1. e4. However it could be worse, he could have opened 1. a4 or 1. Nh3 ...
    Fail.

    1. c4 (English) and 1. Nf3 (Reti) have been played by grandmasters to great effect. However, the two you mentioned (1. d4 and 1. e4) and the two I mentioned probably make up well over 99% of first moves in high-level games.

Fisher(Bobby Fisher) once won a game playing a4 and h4 first 2 moves.

e4 d4 very common openings in chess, but c4 and f4 are still part of some openings. Since most players prepare for a e4 d4 opening, a c4 opening really can be confusing.

Can anyone tell I like chess?

I prefer the traditional Ruy Lopez opening, e4, Nf3.

    Ruy Lopez is 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5.

    1. c4 is known as the English Opening and is actually the 3rd most common opening as it does provide some benefits though 1. d4 and 1. e4 are objectively better.

and 1. f4 is horrible as it opens doors to the eventual ...Qh4+ and usually inhibits/prevents kingside castling.

And who was Fischer playing against in that 1. a4 2. h4 game, a middle school champion? I could beat anyone who played those as their first 2 moves...with 1...d5 and 2...e5.

Wouldnt call it the 3rd most commone opening. there are tons of variotions to e4 just by itself.

f4 will normally be followed by n-f3. Will usually end up in some gambit version with a King side castle. Queen never gonna get chance to do Qh4+

    It was versus a master.
You can open with D5 E5 and still be a chump and lose.

Not sure about that. I'd still like to see his masterful small ball attack involving the Queen and a couple of pawns while his Bishops, Knights and Rooks remain glued to the baseline.

If anything, I think he's hiding our weaknesses. When defense matters, we'll struggle.

It's funny how a lot of folks on this site were bagging on the mavs in '07 because of their defense and many said their good record wouldn't hold up in the playoffs.

That turned out to be true and this current Spurs team is headed in that direction - we're not looking like a playoff strong team. We'll win now by outscoring teams and playing mediocre defense, but as the playoffs come around I'd be interested to see how we'll stop those teams.

Hill's defense is better, Parker's defense is better, Manu is Manu and even Jefferson's defense has been better. I don't know if that will be enough to compensate for the defensive weakness in our front court.
