Surprisingly, after surveying all the seasons since the Robinson era began, 28-4 is not the best.

In 2003 the Spurs went 31-4 from Jan 31 to April 11.
In 1995, 31-4 was also achieved Feb 18 to the end of the season. If you count playoffs, that team won 36 out of 40 games.
(The lockout team also went 28-4 all the way to game 5 of the Finals.)

For comparison against other historically great teams, the 72 win Bulls team went 41-4.

But the greatest team in NBA history, the 2007 Dallas Mavericks, went a stunning 47-4 at one point during their '07 championship run.

Man, wouldn't it be great if the Spurs can match that 47-4 stretch in 2011.

mavs started the season 0-4 IIRC and the turned invincible the rest of regular season and finished atop the league standing, only to get curbstomped by the GSW in the first round and quit

I smell a 22 game winning streak to beat the Mavericks start.
