The value of signing a player from the CFL is being well-illustrated this NFL season thanks to Miami's Cameron Wake.
The former B.C. Lions is terrorizing quarterbacks south of the border just like he did in Canada when he lead the CFL in sacks both in 2007 and 2008. Is there another Cam Wake among this year's crop of CFL players looking to take their talents to the NFL?
Probably not.
But there are lots who will get a look. Here, based on conversations throughout the CFL, are the 10 players most likely to be signed by NFL teams once the signing period begins on Jan. 3.
S.J. Green (Montreal) - SB, Age: 25. The Montreal receiver was signed by the New York Jets last spring but was cut during off-season camp after he missed a bus.Green followed that up by returning to Canada by having a breakout season that featured many highlight real catches. Green caught 58 passes for 875 yards and 10 touchdowns. At 6-foot-2 and 216 pounds, Green has above average size and strength, which he puts to use both blocking and gaining yards after catches.
Chad Owens (Toronto) - KR/WR, Age: 28. Owens was easily the most explosive player in the CFL this season, racking up 2,701 combined yards, which is almost 1,000 ahead of anyone else. NFL teams don't often go after CFL players in their late 20s, but Owens is only a year older than former B.C. Lion Stefan Logan was when he signed with Pittsburgh. Owens enjoyed his CFL s om this season, and would need the right opportunity to take another run at the NFL.
Emmanuel Arceneaux (B.C.) - WR, Age: 23. Arceneaux made big strides during the latter half of his second CFL season, breaking the 1,000-yard mark and hauling in five touchdowns. He can make spectacular catches, but still struggles with consistency. But his age and size (6-foot-2, 211 pounds) make him an attractive project for the NFL.
Philip Hunt (Winnipeg) - DE, Age: 24. Led the CFL in sacks this past season with 16. He has a thick build, long arms and quickness at the snap of the ball. Hunt's high motor and pass-rushing skills have made him a challenge for most tackles in the CFL.
Jerrell Freeman (Saskatchewan) - LB, Age: 24. Freeman is an all-around athlete who excelled at linebacker and on special teams for the Roughriders, making his presence especially felt during the playoffs. He's adept at running through blockers to get to the ball to make plays.
Terrence Jeffers-Harris (Winnipeg) - SB, Age 22. Jeffers-Harris is attracting NFL interest, but is not eligible to be signed during this winter's option-year window. As a draft-eligible player, Harris will enter the 2011 NFL Draft and must complete the option year of his contract with Winnipeg before being eligible to play in the NFL in 2012. Harris had a decent rookie season, interrupted by injuries. But there is plenty of upside in this young, strong after-the-catch receiver, who can also contribute on special teams.
Andy Fantuz (Saskatchewan) - SB, Age 27. The CFL's leading receiver had a huge season and remained healthy throughout the year. Fantuz isn't a burner but has great size and average speed, with decent quickness at the line of scrimmage. His great hands and ball security and yards after catch earned him workouts with the Steelers and Vikings earlier this month.
Tom Johnson (Calgary) - DT, Age: 26. At 6-foot-3 and 288 pounds, he's undersized for an NFL defensive tackle but has good quickness at the line of scrimmage. He was a force for the Stamps during his first season as a starter, a high-energy player who plays to the whistle every down.
Garrett McIntyre (Hamilton) - DT/DE, Age: 26. McIntyre has appealing size, strength and quickness at the line of scrimmage, highlighted by his pass rushing abilities. He has a high motor that never tires, reminding some of former Saskatchewan Roughrider John Chick. Also contributes on special teams.
Josh Bourke (Montreal) - OL, Age: 26: At 6-foot-7, 315 pounds, Bourke has size to earn a look south of the boarder. As Montreal's starting left tackle he has been a key component to one of the league's best offensive lines.
