Last summer, director Kevin Tancharoen impressed Mortal Kombat fans with his dark reimagining of the franchise. His unofficial digital short, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, became an Internet sensation, garnering more than 10 million views on YouTube. Fans of the video game weren't the only ones who noticed, and Warner Premier announced today that shooting for a live-action digital Mortal Kombat series is set to begin next month.
Tancharoen, director of 2009 dance movie Fame, is on board for the project that Warner Premier says "will take gamers deep into the history of warriors they know and love such as Scorpion, Johnny Cage and Liu Kang." If you missed it, here's Tancharoen's original MK short, Rebirth:
"Available this spring through online digital retailers from Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, the Mortal Kombat digital series is an anthology of multiple live action shorts, each providing never-before-revealed insights into characters featured in the upcoming video game as well as the game's universe," Warners said in a statement. "Additional details, including casting, will be announced in the coming weeks."
The new Mortal Kombat video game is being developed by NetherRealm Studios for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game is set to ship on April 19.
