CRAWFORD, Texas - A weekly newspaper that bills itself as President Bush (news - web sites)'s hometown paper endorsed John Kerry (news - web sites) for president, saying the Massachusetts senator will restore American dignity.
The Lone Star Iconoclast, which has a circulation of 425, said in an editorial dated Sept. 29 that Texans should rate the candidates not by hometown or political party, but by where they intend to take the country.
"Four items trouble us the most about the Bush administration: his initiatives to disable the Social Security (news - web sites) system, the deteriorating state of the American economy, a dangerous shift away from the basic freedoms established by our founding fathers, and his continuous mistakes regarding Iraq (news - web sites)," the editorial said.
The Iconoclast, established in 2000, said it endorsed Bush that year. It also said it editorialized in support of the invasion of Iraq, and publisher W. Leon Smith promoted Bush and the invasion in a British Broadcasting Corp. interview, believing Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) possessed weapons of mass destruction.
"Instead we were duped into following yet another privileged agenda," the editorial said.
The newspaper praised Kerry for "30 years of experience looking out for the American people" and lauded his background as "a highly decorated Vietnam veteran."

On the face of it this may seem comical, but it is a serious symptom of what I warned would start to happen if the Republican Party did not reidentify itself, and it's new dominant core values soon. Reagan's Republican party that once believed in small government, reducing en lements, and States Rights is dead. Enter the New-age Republican party. Interventionist, Idealist, spend-thrifts, and above all Federalists.
Yeah, kinda like how the Democrats forgot the lessons of their welfare reforming, pro-free trade, pro-fiscal responsibility, pro-interventionist president from 1993-2001 and reverted back to old school American liberalism mixed with a tinge of isolationism.

I bet the Bush camp is reeling. On the heels of Kerry conceding Arizona, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mizzou (36 electoral votes) to Bush, losing the endorsement of the coveted Crawford newspaper must come as a huge blow.

We in Massachusetts know John Kerry. He got his first taste of politics 32 years ago in the cities and towns of Greater Lowell.
In his 20 years in the U.S. Senate, Kerry, a Navy war hero, hasn't risen above the rank of seaman for his uninspiring legislative record. He's been inconsistent on major issues. First he's for the 1991 Persian Gulf War, then he opposes it. First he's for the war in Iraq, then he's against it. First he's for a strong U.S. defense, then he votes against military weapons programs. First he's for the U.S. Patriot Act, then he opposes it.
Kerry's solution to stop terrorism? He'd go to the U.N. and build a consensus. How naive. France's Jacques Chirac, Germany's Gerhard Schroeder, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and other Iraq oil-for-food scam artists don't want America to succeed. They want us brought down to their level. And more and more, Kerry sounds just like them. In a recent campaign speech, Kerry said America was in the wrong war, in the wrong place, at the wrong time.
No doubt John Kerry sincerely wants to serve his country, but we believe he's the wrong man, in the wrong place, at the wrong time.
