Here's a good write-up from the boys over at Recruitocosm. It's a solid breakdown of which prospects they expect to get offered scholarships during Junior Days.
http://recruitocosm.fantake.com/2011...-and-analysis/
OT Kyle Marrs of San Antonio Brandeis committed to Oklahoma last night (as we expected). He is the first commitment of OU's 2012 class.
Malcolm Brown and Tim Cole are two of the targets by UT who have stated they'll be at Junior day, but some think Aggie has set up a pipeline to their school Brenham by taking their teammate Alexander in the '11 class and getting commitments from Brenham players Troy Green and Adrian Bellard. A poster on 247 from Brenham was saying Brown and Cole are more friends with each other than they are with the others, so it's possible they'd both attend UT if Mack and Co. persuade them.
According to Gigem247 Brown and Cole want to commit early:
"Unlike Alexander, both Brown and Cole want to end the recruiting process fairly quickly.
“We have been talking about it and it’s looking like right around March when we will announce,” Brown said."
I agree, Whisky. I'm of the opinion that DT Malcom Brown and LB Tim Cole won't commit to Texas A&M because their friends did. I do think that will heavily influence their decision, but the difference is Brown and Cole are much more highly sought after prospects than their buddies OL Adrian Bellard and ATH Troy Green. If they ultimately give their pledge to the Aggies, it will be because that's where they want to go and because Texas A&M has done an excellent job of recruiting them all throughout high school. Texas is definitely playing catch-up with those two right now and I'm not expecting them to be Longhorns. I'll leave myself the opportunity to be pleasantly surprised when/if it happens. It's very possible that those guys don't even make it to Junior Days this weekend because they'll have already made up their minds in favor of the Aggies. I think Texas' greatest chance right now is the fact that Cole does have strong feelings for the Longhorns. We can only hope that the Brenham duo makes it to Austin this weekend and Texas gets a major momentum swing in their favor once these guys have the opportunity to sit in Mack Brown's office and get their official scholarship offers. That one moment has changed the opinions of a lot of recruits in the past, so maybe it'll work out. I'd be feeling pretty good right now if I were an Aggie, though.

Here's a name to familiarize yourself with. The UT staff has been evaluating him as a TE/DE for a while now. He may get a serious look if guys like DE Mario Edwards and DT Malcom Brown don't work out.
ATH, Hassan Ridgeway, Mansfield (6-3, 236)

As you can imagine, the UT staff has been working feverishly on evaluations for the 2012 class since National Signing Day ended. Manny Diaz, Bryan Harsin and Major Applewhite have been working with their position coaches in order to decide which prospects will receive offers at Junior Days and which ones will need more of an evaluation period before an official offer is extended. Below is the latest list (as of this morning) of which prospects will be in Austin for the upcoming Junior Days. Some guys have been added and others have dropped off. It will continue to change and it's possible that we see three or four more guys added to the list for this weekend. Stay close...it's going to be a fun week!

Quick update on S LaDarrell McNeil...he says it's possible he may not make it to Austin on Sunday simply because of a lack of transportation. As of right now, he has plans on going to Forth Worth for the TCU Junior Day on Saturday and then he'll head to Austin after that. I'll keep him on the list until I read something more concrete.
Any comments on any of the kids listed in this article, TFloss?
http://www.ihigh.com/vypedfw/article_51850.html
Symple-
My opinions are below based on what I know:
QB, Matt Davis, Klein Forest-
Silky dual-threat QB out of the Houston area. He's a much better runner than he is a passer. Texas had a lot of contact with him over the summer but that fizzled after he tore his ACL in the first game of his junior season. Texas didn't have the opportunity to evaluate his progress as a passer because of it. He'd probably have even more offers it weren't for his injury. UT may offer him eventually as an ATH. I've read lately that Davis has Auburn high on his list (if not at the top). He was supposedly very happy about Auburn winning the MNC. Four-star.
RB, Russell Hansbrough, Arlington Bowie-
I don't know much about him at all and have only recently seen his name pop up in articles. I know ESPN has him listed as a potential DB. He must be legit if SEC schools are already after him. I'll post any info I find on him in the future.
RB, Trey Williams, Spring DeKaney-
Arguably the best RB in Texas. He's a Darren Sproles type at 5'8"/175. Some think he's better than Johnathan Gray who's won two state les in a row (rushed for 8 TDs in the final this year) and could possibly be Rivals' #1 RB for 2012. He had one of the best seasons a Houston RB has ever had with 2,200+ yards on the ground. He's always favored Texas (and some think he could commit to the Horns this weekend), but I've read that he's not too keen on sharing a backfield with Gray who Texas is also after. Texas wants them both after missing on Aaron Green in 2010. I believe Auburn is high on his list if things don't work out with UT. He's also friends with Matt Davis. High four-star, potential five-star.
WR, Thomas Johnson, Dallas Skyline-
Playmaking WR from a high school that consistently cranks out D1 prospects. He's good for making lots of yards after the catch. Already has offers from all over the country. He and Cayleb Jones will both be highly regarded in the national picture. I honestly don't see Auburn in this race as I think it comes down to Texas and Oklahoma. He's another guy that could potentially commit to UT this weekend (even though I think he takes a little more time). Four-star.
WR, Cayleb Jones, Austin High-
Super stud in UT's backyard and he's as smooth as it gets. The list of juniors that I posted has him ranked as the #3 WR in Texas, but I think he's the best overall. He's not overly tall, but he's long and will catch anything thrown in his area. He's not as fast as Johnson but can make up for it with his long strides. He's the cousin of current Auburn WR Emory Blake. There were rumors there for a while that he was heavily considering Auburn because of the high turnover on the UT staff and lack of contact, but those rumors (to my knowledge) have been put to bed. I've always thought he'd be the first commitment of UT's 2012 class and I do expect him to be a Longhorn after this weekend or shortly thereafter. UT has seemingly been recruiting him since birth and I don't see it ending up any differently than him suiting up in burnt orange. High four-star.
DE, Mario Edwards, Denton Ryan-
He's the son of former Florida State and Dallas Cowboys CB Mario Edwards, Sr. He may end up being the #1 DE in the 2012 class. This one will come down to Texas and Florida State. The Seminoles have a HUGE lead right now with the departure of Will Muschamp from Texas and the fact that his father went to FSU. UT has a lot of catching up to do on this one. With that said, I think they're a distant second and he seems FSU bound at this time. The only SEC school I could see getting involved is Florida because of Muschamp. High four-star, potential five-star.

Any truth to the rumor that Jerry Gray could leave for Tennessee?
The only truth to this rumor is that Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman tweeted about it this morning. Tennessee ans LB coach Dave McGinnis is said to be the lead candidate for the DC job. Jerry Gray has been trying to get back to UT for many years and even took a significant paycut when he was hired because Austin is simply where he wants to be. A job opened up and he took it. Rumor has it he even turned down an $100K raise from Pete Carroll to stay with the Seattle Seahawks. I imagine he has aspirations of being UT's defensive coordinator in the future and maybe even the HC. His son just transferred from SMU to UT in order to be closer to his father. I don't see Gray going anywhere as he's currently in his dream situation (according to him).
WR Dominique Wheeler of Crockett has confirmed that he's received an invite for UT's first Junior Day and he will be in Austin this Sunday. The fact that he was pegged as an invite for this first Junior Day means the chances of him receiving an offer are very high. I can see him, Thomas Johnson and Cayleb Jones being offered this weekend as the WRs for the 2012 class. I've added him to the list above.
Whoa! HUGE news tonight...QB Connor Brewer of Scottsdale, Arizona has committed to UT. Nobody knew for sure if he was offered two weeks ago when he was in Austin, but we obviously know now. Commitment #1 is in the books and the class starts with a bang! You can't beat that.
Shocking but awesome news, I figured his recruitment would go longer than February. That's a nice chip in the bag to take to junior days with the recruits knowing a top 100 national Player and one of the best QBs in the country is on board.
Great pickup with Brewer. I'm hoping we will end up with either Matt Davis or Trevor Knight after this news will surely change there recruiting process.
thanks man
Love that Chizik isn't afraid to mosey into Texas. I highly doubt he'll be able to pull any blue-chippers from the state if UT/OU are also after em', though.
Regarding Matt Davis, these were his quotes about the AU visit:
“It was amazing. It was by far my best college visit,” Davis said. “I love everything about Auburn. The place, the people, the hosts, everything -- it’s just a big family. That’s one thing you can’t fake, is family. It was a great day.
“I got to see some fans, a reverse Tiger Walk. I could definitely see myself walking down there. Seeing the thing with Cam, just the way the fans embrace you over here. It’s amazing.”
Davis, who is from Klein Forest in Houston, Texas, projects as one of the nation’s top dual-threat quarterbacks in the class of 2012. He already has approximately 20 offers to his credit but one school stands out above the others.
“I know Auburn is my leader right now, for sure,” he said.
On the RB debate - I hope Texas can sway both Williams and Gray, but it'll be tough. I think they might pull Williams and Gray goes OOS or TCU.
On the WR - Cayleb is a good possession receiver with nice hands and technique, but won't be that guy with break away speed like a Wheeler or possibly Johnson. Wheeler's tape is ridiculously sick with athleticism and instincts with the ball in his hands, but its difficult to tell just how good his hands are. Johnson looks like a sure fire take to me, a kid with that kind of talent who was coached by the same program who just produced a superbly polished receiver in Mike Davis has a chance to make an immediate impact. You definitely offer all three as this is a top heavy WR group in-state and they all have different strengths, but I think Wheeler and Johnson are the two you must have followed by Jones a very close 3rd.
Here's a ton of info on Texas' junior days and some worrisome news on the Jerry Gray front from Hookem247, they made today's update free for everyone to see so I'll post the whole thing:

Yesterday, I reported that Tennessee ans linebacker coach Dave McGinnis was likely the primary target of new Tennessee ans coach Mike Munchak for the open defensive coordinator's position. As of late yesterday, that is no longer the case.
Kirk Bohls first reported yesterday that the ans were interested in Texas defensive backs coach Jerry Gray on Statesman.com.
We're taking that a step further.
Hookem.com has learned that Munchak has approached Gray about the position and Gray is considered the leading candidate.
We do not know if Gray will pursue the position. We are told that the ball is in his court (at least it was as of late yesterday).
Most accounts have Gray as excited and happy to be back at his alma mater, with everything from being back in Austin, to his overall family situation. However, becoming a defensive coordinator in the NFL, not to mention what would likely be a doubling of his salary, has to be somewhat appealing. There is also a level of both comfort and respect with Munchak - Gray worked previously with Munchak in Tennessee.
Will Jerry Gray leave Texas after such a short stay? I can't answer that question, only Jerry Gray can. (Burton)

Hookem.com was the first to report the commitment of 2012 pro-style QB Connor Brewer (Scottsdale, Az./Chaparral) to the Longhorns yesterday.
The commitment of Brewer is huge for several reasons.
First, he’s one of the top junior quarterbacks in the country with offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn (offered Monday), UCLA, Texas A&M, Tennessee and many others.
Brewer is also the first quarterback offer and commitment for new co-offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin.
But it’s arguable that the biggest part of the commitment is its timing.
With one of the nation's top junior quarterbacks in the fold, it gives Texas much-needed momentum heading into the key February 13 junior day.
With Brewer committed, Texas will have the ability to sell receivers Thomas Johnson, Dominique Wheeler and Cayleb Jones, along with running backs Johnathan Gray and Trey Williams, on having a big-time signal caller in the class, a trigger man for the Harsin-Applwehite offense and the fact that Texas is still the place to be for big time football players despite last seasons struggles.
Brewer is a big get for the Longhorns and the timing couldn't have been better. (Hamilton)

We spoke to San Antonio Sam Houston defensive end Javonte Magee yesterday. Magee said he'd like to make it to Texas for Sunday's junior day, but he doesn't know if he'll be able to make it. The visit hinges on possible transportation for Magee to and from the event.
Magee is extremely likely to pick up a Texas offer if he makes it to campus on Sunday. Texas, Baylor and Texas A&M are among Magee's top schools.
Magee said there haven't been many new developments in his recruitment other than the fact that he continues to receive "too much mail". LSU, his childhood favorite, and Miami have started sending more correspondence of late. (Howe)

Hookem.com was the first to report yesterday that Crockett wide receiver Dominique Wheeler will be attending junior day at Texas Sunday.
Wheeler has already attended junior days at Texas A&M and TCU. Between the Horned Frogs and Aggies, TCU is the leader.
However, Texas is in a very good position with Wheeler entering the weekend. (Hamilton)
**
Another skill position prospect who has popped up on the Texas radar is Copperas Cove's Orlando Thomas. Texas checked on Thomas last spring initially and Copperas Cove coaches say the Longhorns were back again in January.
There's been no word yet on a junior day invite for Thomas to Texas. But Cove coaches say the Longhorns have expressed interest.
Thomas camped at Texas last summer. He is being looked at as a possible take as a slot receiver/defensive back. The 5-foot-11, 165-pounder played quarterback for the Bulldawgs as a junior after playing receiver as a sop re.
Thomas runs a legit 4.4-second 40-yard dash. His combination of speed, size and athleticism are what have the Horns interested.
Thomas picked up a verbal offer from Texas A&M in the fall. (Howe)

We're aware of the reports that Dallas A. Maceo Smith safety LaDarrell McNeil will be in Austin this weekend.
However, per a source at Smith that we spoke with yesterday, we are told that McNeil will visit TCU Saturday and that while he has an invite to Texas' junior day for Sunday and the source told Hookem.com that McNeil (6-1, 186) he is unsure if he will be able to attend.
We'll continue to monitor the situation - this could be a "gameday" decision by McNeil.
Whether he is able to visit or not, one thing has remained clear through the process. McNeil hasn't wavered on his feelings towards Texas and he has the Longhorns among his top schools, along with Alabama and TCU. (Howe)

Austin High wide receiver Cayleb Jones will be at Texas' junior day this weekend. Will Jones commit to Texas if offered?
“I don't have a timetable,” Jones said. “I used to think I knew when I wanted to decide, but now I just don't know. I'm just taking things day by day.”
Jones (6-3, 192) said he's looking forward to meeting with the new hires on the Texas staff. Texas is one of only four schools Jones has unofficially visited to this point in the process with the others being Texas A&M, Miami and North Carolina. (Howe)

As we reported yesterday, Hookem.com spoke with DeSoto head coach Claude Mathis and his star offensive lineman Curtis Riser will be at Texas Sunday. Riser (6-4, 285) is considered a lock for an offer and a possible commitment heading into the weekend. LSU is the primary compe or for Riser.
DeSoto defensive end Michael Richardson (6-3, 220) and cornerback Bryson Echols (5-10, 175) are both candidates for junior day invites for Feb. 26. Richardson has offers from Notre Dame and Oklahoma among others and is already full qualified academically. Echols sports a 3.9 GPA and is starting to see his stock rise.
Texas assistant coaches Bruce Chambers and Stacy Searels and head coach Mack Brown were all by DeSoto in January and there's a feeling that Texas will evaluate Richardson and Echols closely. (Howe)

Hookem.com texted or spoke with several 2012 offensive linemen yesterday, including:
OT D.J. Humphries (Charlotte, NC/Mallard)
OT Trey Kennan (Argyle, Tx.)
OT Simon Goines (Keller, Tx./Central)
G/C John Michael McGee (Texarkana, Tx./Texas High)
G Mac Long (Edna, Tx.)
C/DT Joey Hunt (El Campo, Tx.)
As of late Monday night, none of the six had received February 13 junior day invites.
Humphries hasn’t spoken with Texas offensive line coach Stacy Searels since he was verbally offered, but is receiving mail. (Hamilton)
**
Spring Dekaney running back Trey Williams confirmed to Hookem.com via text that he still plans to be at Texas junior day February 13. He lists a top six of Texas A&M, Texas, Auburn, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Oklahoma State. (Hamilton)
**
Look for more junior day updates throughout the day today and the remainder of the week.
More good Horns news - 2010 LB Tevin Jackson from Garland has been cleared finally by the NCAA. He Enrolls this summer and will be eligible for fall.
Damn, what a relief!
No kidding, that came completely out of left field as there was no talk of any progress at all being made. After the Brewer commitment yesterday and this today I wonder what that 3rd piece of good news will be?
