Some of the information that the White House has refused to provide to Congress for its review of the nomination of John Bolton includes the names of American companies mentioned in intelligence reports on commerce with China and other countries covered by export restrictions, say government officials who have been briefed on the do ents.

It had previously been reported only that the White House was refusing to hand over the names of 19 American persons mentioned in 10 intelligence reports by the National Security Agency.

The fact that the do ents also included the names of American companies, and that the subject had to do with possible violations of American export restrictions, provides a new clue as to why the White House might be rebuffing the congressional requests.

The names of the Americans and the companies remain highly classified, but they were provided to Bolton by the National Security Agency in response to special requests he made as under secretary of state for arms control. The Democrats who forced the postponement last week of a vote on Bolton's nomination as ambassador to the United Nations argued that the Senate should insist on access to the same information that was provided to Bolton.

Seems to me that a pretty easy solution is to let the Senators on the Senate Confirmation Committee have a peek at these do ents. This could be a cover story to get some of the heat off releasing the rest of the Bolton do ents.

Actually, the committee (yes, the Democrats too) has already seen all the do ents being asked for by the Senate minority. It's obstructionist showboating, that's all.

No they haven't. The WH refuses to hand over about 10 do ents related to Bolton. The WH wants to dictate to the Senate what do ents it wants to release and that's bull .

Bolton's already been voted out of committee. They've seen all they needed to to make a determination. Time to vote.

It's Senators from the floor demanding to be allowed to do what the Committee has already done.

It's a filibuster by another name, that's all.

Bush has no respect for the U.N. and wants to destroy it or marginalize it, hence the nomination of a sociopath like Bolton.

Then I guess the real question is how did this nomination get out of committee, with the WH able to hold back what may be vital do ents that may somehow compromise Bolton as our Representative at the U.N.? Did the senate committee simply not know these do ents existed? or did they simply not care? What happened to the advise part of advise and consent of the Senate in the Bolton nomination process? Maybe this is another reason the Senate Committee refused to endorse the Bolton nomination? Bet that doesn't happen to much.
