One more year: No retirement in McDyess’ plans

CHICAGO — Antonio McDyess, the 36-year-old Spurs forward who as recently as last month had been leaning toward retirement at the end of the season, said Thursday he plans to return for a 15th season.

“My mind is pretty much made up,” McDyess said. “I feel like I’ll be able to lace ‘em up and go again.”

this is a great news for everybody even for Tiago, having a year under his belt I'm pretty sure Tiago can be very helpful next year and give more rest to Dyess and Tim

I think Splitter will be fine. Dice will likely play even less than he does this year next season.

Awesome news. Even for a Tiago fan, i love it.

Dice will be in full Horry mode next year when we dust him off right before playoffs to defend our le.

After another Bonner chokejob in the year's upcoming playoffs, i have no doubt that Tiago will be seeing a huge increase in minutes next season.

Still would be plenty of PT available (at least in the regular season). I'll bet Pop would love to cut Dyess to around 10 mpg (and sit every 2nd half of b2bs) next year and get Duncan down even further.

Also, while I'm optimistic about the health staying strong for the rest of this season (knock on wood) - when you have a 2012 front line that consists of (will be) 37year old McDyess, (will be) 36 year old Tim Duncan, Blair with no ACLs, and Bonner (who has missed 10+ games in 4 of the last 5 years) - assuming no injuries would be folly.

Great, we'll just use him against Nowitski, the Lakers, and Celtics!

I'm quite sure he'll be a great mentor for Tiago as Tiago takes up more of the reins next year.

    Great news. Dice rules.

Spurs will have all their players from this year back next year. Next summer should be a very quiet one.

    Damn great news!

I'm sure that the Spurs will prepare themselves by targeting a true, young center (not a power forward) for the long term. A young big that can take on some of the responsibilities Duncan currently has now. Get him into the development league which would put him on track to transition in the year after Dice retires. I don't know if that's Cousin or someone else.

His play and the play of the whole team this season has got to be convincing enough for him to make this decision. I've always liked McDyess, I remember him as a young player on the Nuggets and reading an article where he said David Robinson was his favorite player. He has been a favorite of mine ever since.

Pop has certainly done an outstanding job in managing the minutes of the old man.

Pop has certainly seen the benefits of having above average production, in limited minutes, from the old man, is a heckuva lot better than average-to-below average production, in expanded minutes.

Had he not had the injury problems, what player does everyone think would be closest to what he could have potentially been?

I'm having a hard time with it. I think he could have been better than Karl Malone.
